In a world first, scientists in Israel have shown that they could biologically reverse the ageing process by giving humans oxygen therapy in a pressurised chamber. As we age, the protective caps at the end of chromosomes, known as telomeres, shorten. This then causes DNA to become damaged and cells to stop replicating. Through the oxygen therapy, which was trialed on 35 healthy adults over 64 and lasted for three months, the scientists saw a lengthening of the participants' telomeres by 20 per cent. According to Professor Shai Efrati of Tel Aviv University, these results provide the scientific community with "a new foundation of understanding that ageing can, indeed, be targeted and reversed at the basic cellular-biological level."
