How can you tell when a watermelon is ripe enough to pick?

I think that the stem is suppose to be black.

он должен плавать в воде на поверхности и не тонуть и хрустеть при нажатии

When I grow my own, the hollow test has always failed. So I am trying the smell test like you would on cantaloupes. But when I buy watermelons from the store, the hollow test is great. We have gotten some very ripe and yummy watermelons this year. Seedless are great to test this way.

You can tell buy looking at the size too and giving it a little flick. If the sounds is more hollow than hard, then its probubly ripe. Thats how I check anyways.

This is an old time tradition for my family, you thump the melon...checking to hear a hollow or heavy sound coming from the watermelon. If our hear a heavy sound its ready to be picked.

They used to say you could thump the watermelon and it would have a hollow sound. Sometimes it worked for me.

I have never actually picked a watermelon . in the stores I just go with if it feels to soft stay away from it.
