Is Hair Color Bad for your Hair and Scalp?

My sister just started coloring or dying her hair to cover the gray. Some of her friends told her that she could ruin her scalp and dry out her hair. She thinks they are just jealous of the prety hue she now spots and doesn't feel that is 100% true. I think I tend to agree with her. Do you think coloring hair is bad? Do you color it yourself or go to a salon? Which is better?

I have never died my hair and I am a senior citizen. I think it is bad for your hair and probably your scalp as well.

My mom has been doing it for over 55 years and her scalp is just fine

It used to dry my scalp right on top a lot. Once I stopped putting a rinse on it, it finally went back to normal and did not itch or feel dry. I don't use any rinses or bleaches any more because they were not good for my head.

I have been coloring my hair for 50 years, and I went to cosmetology school as well. I do my own hair all over, but for highlights or lowlights, I have someone else do it. You can get these done at the beauty schools much cheaper. Do not perm over color, and do not color all over real often, or it will fry your hair. You can do the roots only, that is ok. Use good conditioners on your hair like Ion and Nexus. I have maintained my hair all these years in good condition, while using hair color. The worse mistake people make is coloring all over too often using perioxide/developer hair color, and perming over color. This can make your hair melt. You can buy colors easier on your hair that do not contain perioxide. Good Luck.

I don't know on ruining your scalp. I have dyed my own hair for over 20 years and my head and hair are fine.

I do not know if it damages your hair and scalp, but I always stayed away from doing it for fear that it did. I probably never will dye my hair.

Yes it is. I believe the darker colors are worse. When I retired on disability, I figured who cares if my hair is gray; and I stopped coloring it.

I have never dyed my hair, am content to let it age naturally the same as the rest of me. There have been a lot of reports of dye being dangerous, so wonder why people want to do this to themselves.

I don't color my hair, because I just like to be as natural as possible in everything I do and I would probably be allergic to the process and chemicals anyway. If I were going to color my hair regularly to cover the grey or whatever, I would do a little research on what is in the mix that will be frequently absorbed through my scalp. Remember, what little might be left of our brains when our hair begins to turn grey is very close to the scalp.
