What does it mean when someone says "I'm not book smart, but I'm street smart"

Because all I hear is "I'm not real smart, but I'm imaginary smart"

I have always heard the phrase "book smart, life dumb". Meaning that while someone may be very smart academically, they have no clue how to apply all that knowledge to the everyday world around them. They lack the experience to do tasks that some of us would consider very simple. Kind of like a straight 'A' high school student who can't pass the driving part of a driver's test. On the flip side, I have seen a lot of really dumb people behind the wheel!

Just them trying to act like not having an education is somewhat alright.

Sounds like someone is saying they are not educated but they learned their lessons the hard way by making mistakes.

Good Morning amrogers29,
It means that someone is trying to lure you away from your realization that they are in fact, an idiot.

I think what it means is because they may not do well by the book, they understand how to make it in the world if needed.....maybe something that isn 't taught in class. It is a different kind of smart.

Stret smart (based on your experience) means you have made so many mistakes in what you normally do that you now know how to avoid the mistakes but, as soon as you try something new you will screw it up because you only learn by experience. Book smart means you learn from other's mistakes and experience so you can avoid most of their mistakes even though you have never been in the situation before. Book smart is not usually a complete replacement for street smarts.

I think it is self explanatory. They know their way around and how to maniputlate the system but have no viable way to excell in life. It is not a good thing.
