If you can't pay your hospital bill and they turn you to collection agency what do you do?

My visit to the ER for my son turned into a 65 thousand dollar payment. For two years i paid what i could and got the bill down to 58,700.00 but they wanted it in full at the end of the two years or they would turn me into collections. I am now in collections and paying $250.00 a month but they want more now that a year has gone by, they want to up it to $350.00. Someone told me i was a fool for even paying it. What do you think? Should i continue or should i stop?

Send each bill as much as you can each month. As long as you pay them SOMETHING they can't come after you. It's when you stop paying. Call them & see if you can work something out. Most times they will write off large portions of the bill for those who truly can't pay. Also, technically, medical bills aren't supposed to count against your credit report but try to get it cleared up.

Give them as little as possible a month maybe they will make you another offer, they will just be happy to get some money and do not let them bully you and then I would make sure they are billing you for services you actually got because they are famous for listing services that are either paid for or you did not even have.

I think that the simple fact that they are basically harassing you even though you have been paying consistently is enough reason to say the heck with it and stop paying. I think that you are doing the best that you can and that obviously isn't good enough. I think that I would try to find an organization that can help you out with the bill or stop worrying about it altogether.

I really don't know what the protocol is for this sort of thing, since I'm a Canadian and haven't (thankfully) found myself in this sort of situation. But I do hope you resolve it.

Oh this must be a US thing. We are lucky that we in the UK do not have to pay for hospital treatment on the NHS. I really think that we take it too much for granted and should be exposed to other countries suffering and unfairness more often.
Good luck with paying off this bill, it seems that some of your countryfolk have posted very good ideas here.

Stop paying or pay much less ($20) until they reduce the amount you owe to reasonable amount. Most hospitals will work with you and take a large write - off. If not, contact your attorney general to report their abuse of power. . . . People I know have been able to get real movement from their A. G. to make creditors act in a more reasonable way. Plus the laws are different with regards to medical bills - clearly you are making an attempt to pay the bill, so I would hope they would work with you - good luck to you . . . .

I think if the healthcare system wants to gouge us for huge amounts of money, then they should work with you to get a payment you can live with. I commend you for trying to pay it. I don't know what they are thinking. Who could come up with that kind of money in only 2 years time? I think I would continue to pay what you can. Your credit rating has already taken the hit, so I don't think it could hurt that anymore. I know someone who gave up trying to pay their bill. It went to collections who hounded them for a year and then it all sort of went away...stain on their credit report....biggest problem is that now when they go to the dr, they have to pay up front. Good luck.

Many medical facilities want to finalize accounts, some offer a discount if you pay in full at the end of one year. However, not many people have that kind of money. I don't see how a hospital can turn anyone over to a collection agency if there are monthly payments faithfully being made on the account. I think you should contact the collection agency, see if a reasonable monthly payment can be arranged, that still allows you to feed your family. Also, most counties have some sort of advisor for people that have credit issues. This advisor acts as a mediator working with you and the creditors and usually the monthly payments are more reasonable. Why? Because you now have a third party that is a government agency on your side. Another thing you may want to consider is looking into any social service program like Medicaid. I know that Medicaid, social services has a negative connotation to it, but you have been making payments, perhaps the rest can be covered. I would much rather see my tax dollars help someone out who has been trying, rather than to subsidies for oil and ethanol. Good luck & God Bless.

I cannot understand how so many of our Hospitals are having to file Bankruptcy, because they are just overwhelmed with Illegal Immigrants.
Seems many of them are just using the E/R's as FREE Health Clinics. They certainly aren't losing any sleep worrying about THEIR BILLS.
If I were you, I would go down to your local Government Resource Center. This is where we have the Offices of our State and Federal Rep's that are from this area.
They have people there you can talk to about ANY PROBLEMS you are having and they will tell you what Resources are available to you.
If you can't pay, you can't pay - you shouldn't have to be making Yourself sick worrying about this. Look up (in the Phone Book) where your nearest office of your State Senator/ Congressman is located .............
Get your paperwork together and go down there and talk to them.
Good Luck!

They can't hold medical bills against you, even if it shows up on your credit report. Even if you send them something, they can't do anything to you. Most will write off most of it or set up some type of payment plan. Send them $20 a month, call the hospital & they will likely write most of it off.
