Many parents in Europe let their children drink wine during dinner claiming the health benefits. Do you think children should drink wine, and if you do, what about the drinking law?

Many studies have shown that drinking a glass of red wine has health benefits but I would not let my child drink wine during dinner.

My kids were used to having a glass with dinner. When they were real young we watered it down. In many northern European countries where wine isn't such a tradition, a small glass of beer is given. It never seemed to have hurt my kids and never caused any problems in life.

I think children should taste everything. My grandpa gaves me advocaat and it was really tasty :P I mean it's not about % it was just sweet. It's good to give child wine as a supplement to the dinner. Worse is when the child buy cheap wine and go with their friends to the park.

I do not really like the idea, but maybe there is something to it.

No way, I don't have kids but they will not be allowed to drink alcohol. Geeze, this health benefit is going a little too far.

I don't think that it's a bad thing to educate our young about drinking appropriately by letting them have a small amount of wine with dinner.

No. It's bad enough we probably all drank before it was legal!

I don't think a glass of wine would hurt them once in a while. However, unless it is the really sweet type, a kid probably wouldn't like the taste of it in the first place.

I don't see a reason to serve alcohol to a minor especially if they're not interested in the first place. Hand them a cigarette too while your at it.. If I did this, I'd offer them a small shot glass amount maybe. My mom used to give us tomato juice. Not crazy about it but her intentions were good. I hear in some countries the wateris so bad most people live on wine..?

Watered down weak wine as is commonly drunk in Italy is not going to make children into blithering sinos. I have been there and the wine is very mild and is wonderful. The children are not typically lushes, and seem healthier than our children here. Most of them are very matter of fact about it, and frankly it is a heck of a lot healthier than soda pop. I'd prefer a child having one glass of wine with dinner any day over a border-line obese American child drinking can after can of soda pop at dinner or through out the day.

Unfortunately, while there may be antioxidants and other healthy stuff in wine, I don't think its enough to really affect your health for better or for worse. What those studies show, I think, is that people who have access to wine have longer lifespans and are healthier in general. The people who have money to spend on wine, are the people who also have money for good health care and other things like that.
On the letting children drink it note, I don't see anything wrong with it as long as you aren't letting them get drunk off it. You should teach them to be responsible about consuming alcohol. Children drink wine all across the world in religious Sunday services. Personally, I'm not sure I'd care to waste my wine on my kids though, haha, as horrible as that sounds!
