What do you think of Diversity in society?

I believe diversity is necessary for a society to grow and become more tolerant of others. What do you think? Please be honest.

I love diversity. The city I live in, San Francisco, is one of the best for diversity. All kinds of different ethnic groups and cultures here. You can learn a lot from other cultures.

"Diversity" is a word that shouldn't be in our dictionary: Acceptance for diversity color, race, religion, culture, etc. We should have been born with that tolerance in our minds, since all of us were born as human beings. Unfortunately, we are "human beings".

While societies with a single language and culture can feel a great deal of unity (think Norway), I believe that the democracies that struggle with diversity are rewarded with a richer worldview and more tolerance.

studies have been done on this, diversity: decreases trust, increases crime, decreases civic involvement, reduces producivity and wealthy, widens incomes gaps, increases crime, increases conflict and causes political polarization.

Diversity is necessary for society to thrive and grow. Without diversity the world would not only be dense it would also be boring.

I think diversity is awsome. Unfortunately many people don't feel the same. I am White (of various Western European extraction), Black (likely of West African extraction which I am ashamed to not know origin of), and various North American Indian tribes (doing more research). I have seen bigotry fly from every direction and no race has a monopoly on it. My husband and I are also converting to Judaism and we've really seen people lose all cooth toward us that way by whipping out some hate. Bigotry is born out of ignorance and most that hate are those that do not want to educate themselves on diversity and seem to gloat pride of their ignorance when spewing hatred. I really can feel the empathy when I see a group of people being hated upon after seeing so many ways hate can be twisted. The one thing I do like about my neighborhood is there seems to be a worldly existance of many races and religions and people get along here and are friendly to each other. There are over 60 languages spoken in this school district alone. If I see someone and have a question all I have ever seen is eagerness to explain and teach culture. Too bad tolerance (and exploration) toward diversity isnt the rest of the city, state, country, and the rest of the world.

We are a multi-cultural, pluralistic society. Basing our view of another person founded on race or religion, is bigotry. Our feelings about a person is based on their character, which means how do we each behave towards each other. A white person friendly with a black man does not mean the white man is condesending. The black person is also not being subservient because he is friendly with a white man. Could it go back to "Do unto others, etc..."

I think diversity is a beautiful thing that is naturally acceptable until uneducated adults infuse their opinions into it and tarnish the innocent outlook of the youth in all socieities.
