How many children should one family have?

I am a mother to four young children. I get looks and comments all the time! Every time I go out I hear that I sure have my hands full. My children are 4, 3, 2, and 8 months. They are very well behaved and have great manners. We live off my husbands income and some babysitting that I do. We budget but my kids are taken care of. So many people think two children is enough. What do you think about large family's?

According to your profile you are very young to have so many children !! I feel that as long as a person, parents, etc. can provide what is necessary to a childs raising...supplying what is needed; housing, food, medical needs, clothes and a quality education amongst other things then how many children you have is totally a personal choice. I really hate to hear of folks who cannot provide independently their own needs to have children. The United States, as a whole, have alot of children to raise that we taxpayers are paying for and one reason the United States is in debt. The cost of welfare, medicaid, food stamps and other free programs has left a debt on the U.S. that will never be redeemed. Kudos to you for having so many kids I hope your living expenditures stay the same.

I think you should be able to have as many as you want within consideration so to speak. My friend has 4 boys that are 12, 10, 8 and 6... now she does have her hands full as her kids are always bobbin around getting into things... Not sure if it's because they are all boys or what. I have 2 and that is hands full for me. Some people have more patience and can have more children. There is a show called "19 and counting".... I can't stand that show! I don't believe the children are getting enough parent/child quality time! As a family of 2 we budget also as my hubby is the only one working and has been for the last 2 years. But we still get along and do loads of things! Not like we budget to do nothing.

I always wanted a larger family, but I only have two kids. I wanted four, but I could not have anymore than three because of C-sections, and I had a disease called polycystic ovarian syndrome, which meant I had cysts on my ovaries. I had trouble getting pregnant with my second child, and so we decided on just the two.
As far as larger families, I think it is wonderful, unless the parents are exploiting the family, like in the case of Jon and Kate Goslin and the Duggars. But, I live in a small town in which half the residents are either Amish and Mennonite and large families are the norm. Many of them have a dozen children or more, so I do not see it as bad.

I think that if you can cope with the amount of children that you have no one should criticize your decision. I would only criticize someone like the Octomom who as a single woman without a husband has chosen to have about 14 children and lives off student loans', govt. handouts' like SSI and Food Stamps' and cheap publicity. I would call the Octomom irresponsible. You seem very responsible. You babysit and your husband works' to finance your family. I would say you both seem like good people.

I have 2 & find that to be a great number but if you can financially & physically keep up with 4, then more power to you. I never had any help from their dad so I cut my losses since you can only do so much as one person & keep my sanity intact. Some people are great with kids & should have many while others shouldn't have any at all. The childrens quality of life should be the most important factor. I'd rather give one child a good life then to barely make it by with multiple kids. Both my families came from very large families & this was their answer when asked why they didn't have more kids. They were pretty much farm hands back then.

i feel in this day and age none. at the most 1. people have no jobs, food and very little money, kids are expensive. you know people get sick, my father was very young , i was maybe 12 and things got back quick. and i know people that worked for the same company 36 years that have no job now. that was just 2 of us.

I think as many as you can support and care for. I am the mother of 6 but mine are grown now. It wasn't easy, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. I say it is no ones business how many children you have, that is a personal decision. I believe big families are GREAT.

I believe that a family should be as large or as small as you feel you should have. It is not any of my business how many children make up a family nor is it anybody else's. Just be sure to love them and take good care of your children they grow up fast. One other comment on the other side of the spectrum is that my oldest daughter does not have any children and is sick of all the comments she gets about that. There are reasons and she does not like to share with others so she will say something like "I am child free by choice."
