If you are invited to a Birthday Celebration for a friend and it says "no gifts" do you still feel you need to take a gift?

I recently received an invitation for a 40th birthday party at a very nice restaurant. The hosts of the party sent this out 6 weeks ahead of time and in very small print at the bottom it said "no gifts necessary". If the printed invitation (professionally done) had just said "NO GIFTS" I probably would have felt better, but now I feel I need to take a gift because of how this was phrased and becuase it is for a dear friend. What are your thoughts?

I do. I would probably do something small and thoughtful and try to make it a private exchange.

of course ..a gift is just that ..it should have said gifts optional..i think as we get older the gifts are not important we just want to celebrate with our friends, so do what makes u happy

This happened to me recently when a friend threw herself a birthday party because she was feeling blue. She said absolutely no gifts. Well, I ended up giving her a gift card because some of my other friends were telling me all the cool gifts they were bringing.. So, I gave her something anyways & told her to use it towards the party. Bring something nice but it doesn't have to be expensive. You can always claim it's a token of your friendship & you WANTED to do it. :o) Your host probably just wanted to give everyone the option but agree that the wording makes it sounds like you should..

The wording is very cryptic... I would get them something small. It's a friend too so it's someone you care about.

If it said "no gifts", I would interpret it as the host's wish, which would mean a gift is not wanted. If it said "no gifts necessary", however, it would have a completely different meaning. It would express that it would be acceptable, if you did not bring a gift, but you could bring a gift, if you wanted.

I can see what you're saying - I think the necessary part is an attempt to say it in a polite way. I've read somewhere about ettiquite with this and sometimes suggest saying something along the lines of "Your presence is gift enough". I would probably bring a card and respect their not wanting you to bring gifts. If you really want to, maybe give it to them before or after the party and tell them that because he/she is such a good friend you really wanted to give them something - I wouldn't bring it to the party because it might make people who didn't bring gifts feel awkward.

You should respect their wises and not try to second guess. Remember that you can never be sure about anything. You should not continually stress yourself trying to figure out what things mean and what there means might be. Is there a hidden a agenda? Is there so other meaning? You just can't go around wondering. If you want to you can give a gift. The meaning of a gift should be generosity. The meaning of generosity is giving something without expecting something in return. You have to relax and go where your heart directs.
