Mystery Shopper shops. Scam or not?

Do you know anything about Mystery shopping? Is it a legit job or a scam like so many popping up in this uncertain economy? Do you have info for me?

I have often wondered how it would be to work as a Mystery shopper, but I do not think that some people, who I know, would consider it a "real" job" and would not understand and think that I would be wasting my time. Who cares what they think, though.

Wish I could help you out, but I'm in the same boat. I joined a site or 2, but it seemed like I would have to pay a fee to get on the "good" lists...sounds fishy to me.

Personally I don't know anything about being a personal shopper but I read that they are just a scam I don't think that I would really ever be interested in doing it myself.

Mystery shopping is a real job. I used to be a mystery shopper for a few of the sites out there. The best way to tell the difference between a scan and a legit mystery shopping company is whether or not they ask for money upfront. All of the mystery shopper companies I’ve worked for did not require a “membership fee” or any kind of investment to show I was serious. From what I’ve found, it would be very difficult to be a mystery shopper as a full time job, but it can be a nice added income.

Safeway and other business use mystery shoppers...it is a legitamate job. But most agencies that advertise that they can get you a job as one I would bet are scams. Try calling the corporate office of where you would consider mystery shopping and ask what company mystery shops for them...they might tell you and you could apply directly...good luck! Cuda

We use to be a mystery customer for a certain pizza chain. It was perfectly legitimate. Once every other week we were to order a pizza. We could get it delivered or eat at the restaurant, but we had to try it both ways. We did this for about a year. We then had to fill out a review of everything from the phone call, workers behavior, plus everything about the food. It was fun and it was paid for pizza and we really enjoyed it.

I think it's really a scam, like so much else. Have checked out a number of "employment agencies" looking for mystery shoppers, tasters, you-name-it. They all want YOU to pay $$ UP FRONT, for which they say you will be reimbursed. Just don't think it's worth the risk. In fact, ALL "home-based" jobs are just scams, in my opinion. Wish I could find a "real" one too :)
