Why aren't there parachutes on airplanes?

Why don't they have parachutes on airplanes??? They have flotation devices in the seats but I think it would make more sense to have parachutes. It would be nice to have both, but if a plane was crashing, I'd rather have a parachute.

Planes go so fast and travel so high that a parachute would be impractical. There is also a matter of weight. More extra weight less paying customers.

The result is the same with or without parachute: death

They would most likely take up to much room and it would be utter confusion if needed.

Commercial flights fly at too high an altitude for use of parachutes. Not everyone knows how to use parachutes.

Passenger planes do not have parachutes because most people would not know how to use them and if you did it wrong you would be killed.

Not sure how that would work. I'm sure there wouldn't be enough for all passengers. How would they be distrubuted?????

Most people don't know how to use parachutes. Passenger planes are not designed for use with parachutes.

Would you really jump out of a plane going 300 or more mph? You'd end sucked in to the engines and turning into hamburger.

I do'nt know but they should have some because then if something happens then everybody will be able to jump.

good point! gotta be too expensive for the companies. heck if they won't even foot the cost of one's luggage, how are they gonna pay for 'chutes for all passengers?
And could u imagine the lawsuits if someone actually tried 2 use 1 and it failed? People wd blame the airline if they lacked the knowledge to use it properly. not the airline's job to educate ppl, really....
wow, that opens a whole can of worms!
