Leaner Driver

O dear poor me.

I have just been talking to my son on Zoom in Bristol he has asked me to help him learn to drive, he is coming home from Uni next Saturday and has booked 10 lessons with a school here at home BUT ! he's asked me to help and teach him to be a good driver and not to just past the test.

Has any one of you out there in Toluna land had to teach a child / family member / wife to drive ?

I don’t drive myself so not a problem, but years ago I was going to learn applied for my license and my husband took me out a couple of times, that was a bad idea I am surprised we were still together, think the experience put me off driving all together. Reply

I haven't, but my dad taught me a lot when I was learning to drive during the lockdown (I had a proper instructor before then but lessons stopped when the pandemic hit). He was a great teacher and it actually saved us a lot of money. I think it's important to have some lessons with an instructor, so you learn what you need to do to pass the test, but it is also really useful to have practice outside of that to build experience. They always advise against it as it can cause tensions within a relationship, but good luck if you try. Reply

No!
My brother in law was a qualified instructor but stepson declined free lessons from him on the grounds it was his uncle.
He is now in his 40s and still doesn’t drive:(

No I would never pass on my bad habits to a learner, especially a family member.
My father did teach me to drive in 1959 but it was on and old airfield runway at Holmsley in the New Forest so I mastered gears and 3 point turns thus gaining confidence.
