Teenage Justice--Canceling A Kid

Today in New York Magazine I read an article about a boy named Diego who was after one teenaged transgression was canceled or ostracized by his entire high school. After his name shows up on a bathroom wall saying he is a boy to avoid he is suddenly ostracized by everyone. No one wants to sit near him in class so the teacher makes him sit outside the classroom. Soon other boys join the list and some of the students had not done anything to anyone. It was almost a witch hunt mentality. The whole thing made me remember much of the bullying I faced in high school and in even younger grades. Were any of you bullied or were you part of the popular crowd?

Yes, some minor issues so my answer was taking a different route to school to avoid them, tried to make as many friends as I could so that I wouldn't be a loner, and telling them I don't have extra money to give them, etc. Reply

Had to deal with some mean girls, mostly in middle school. A few obnoxious boys, mostly in high school. Hope they've all grown up and aee raising their kids ( if they have any) to be better to people than they were. Reply

I never had any problems with being bullied on an ongoing basis; just the occasion conflict with another student. Overall I was very well liked by fellow students from K-12 and college. Reply

I was personally never bullied and I guess you could say I was part of the more popular crowd. However, I definitely didn't take part in making anyone else feel badly like so many students often would. As a matter of fact, I would do just the opposite and take up for the ones that were picked on anytime I witnesses it because I hated when others would mess with someone and try to hurt their feelings on purpose. Of course, in like my middle school years I did participate in nonsense like that....but by the 8th grade I was able to put myself in the person's shoes who were being bullied and see that I certainly wouldn't have liked the same treatment myself. So that's when I'd make a point in taking up for those who just did not deserve how they were being treated. Many times it was to do with what they were wearing or the type of shoes they had on. These things typically are not exactly within their control and they can only depend on their caregivers support and obviously they couldn't afford to get them all the name brands. That's just no reason to make anyone feel bad at all. Reply

I was NEVER "popular." And I was bullied throughout school by someone who, on other occasions, was a close friend. Guess he couldn't stand that I wouldn't kowtow to him :) Reply

I was not popular. I only had two friends and we were the poor kids that the rich kids made fun of because we wore old clothes. It was not bullying in the physical sense like goes on today but it was extreme teasing. They tormented us and made us hate going to school. This is the reason I home schooled my kids and my grands are being home schooled also. I feel bad for all the kids that are suffering at the hands of bullies. I just don't understand what is wrong with kids that makes them think it is o.k. to treat others this way. Reply
