Meet the Xenobots

Scientists at the University of Vermont have engineered the first living robots - programmable entities made from living cells - that can reproduce, or, more accurately, replicate themselves.

(Fans of Jurassic Park may be alarmed to hear that this type of xenobot was originally derived from frog stem cells ..!)

The little guys look adorably like Pac-man. They replicate themselves by gathering bundles of living cells which become little versions of themselves.

The potential applications for this kind of robotics technology are manifold.

Do you find the Xenobots MK3 exciting, baffling, or terrifying? :)

I don't think I would want to meet or even say hello to Xenobots at all. Thanks all the same Hawksmoor! Reply

I seem to recall that people in 1825 thought that riding on a steam engine at such a high speed 25 mph would instantly kill one.
I have a son who is teaching computers to think but he is tad worried by Xenobots.
We are hopelessly inept at controlling social media so it is clearly concerning as to how these little chaps might grow exponentially and start thinking at some time.
