Unforgettable

I have just finished reading a fascinating little piece about Mariah Carey's famous Christmas song "All I Want For Christmas is You."

It turns out that her management team suggested she bring out a Christmas album.

No musician bought out Christmas albums, in those days, unless their career was dying. It was 1994, and Mariah Carey, at the time, was new and at the top of her career. Some said it would be the death knell of her career.

Reluctantly, Mariah and her co-songwriter, Walter Afanasieff agreed, and they sat down to write three original Christmas songs to accompany the traditional songs that would grace the album.

They managed to write two songs over time, but were stuck for a third. Then, over a cup of coffee, she and co-songwriter, Walter Afanasieff, started playing around with some cute musical notes they'd dreamed up and some words that had sprung to mind.

It wasn't the traditional-style Christmas song - more of a pop song, but they carried on composing. Then, just 15 minutes later they had written the music and lyrics to "All I Want For Christmas is You". They went to the studio and recorded it. The rest is history.

World-wide, the song became a hit and $60M in royalties came rolling in.

On average, Mariah Carey earns around $12M a year, from royalties of "All I Want For Christmas is You". After 25 years, the public still love the song.

Have you heard of this song?

Do you get into the Christmas spirit when it is played or does another song do this for you?

I love the song, "All I Want For Christmas is You", but there are a lot of famous and popular songs played at Christmas.

"White Christmas", "Snoopy's Christmas", "Feliz Navidad", "I Saw Mummy Kissing Santa Claus" to name a few.

What are your favourite Christmas songs?

Boy, I'd love Santa to bring me a skill that bought in $12M in royalties, each Christmas. What about you?

I know the song and really like it. Also like Jingle Bell Rock, Snoopy's Christmas, It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas, and others. Reply
