I don't. I have the type that last for 10 years, and then the entire unit is changed out. These were just installed a year ago. Reply

Battery-operated ion-chamber smoke detectors (the commonest type) use batteries that should be replaced annually. My optical smoke detector runs from AC power with an internal backup battery, which lasts for several years. Reply

We used to change batteries twice a year but now we don't have to change them at all. We have a new kind with a 10 year battery and when the time comes you just buy a new detector instead of buying batteries. They were reasonably priced, I think about $20. Reply
