Curious about the history of pride month?
Closed

Pride Month is celebrated every year in June in most parts of the world to recognize Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersexed, Agender, Asexual, and Ally community (LGBTQAI+) individuals and what they have gone through. Additionally, it helps to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, New York whose riots paved the way for an international gay rights movement to be born.

On June 24th, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, which was a bar where majority of the people were gay, lesbian and transgender. At this point in time, homosexual acts were illegal in all states except in Illinois and dressing up as another gender was a crime. The police arrested some employees and took illegal alcohol. However, on June 28th, 1969, the police went back to close the bar forever and when they went to arrest members of the LGBT community, they fought back. This uprising & riots that later continued were huge moments in history. Not only did it inspire the US, it inspired other countries to fight back too! Here are a few key moments:

1. In 1970, the first Gay Pride parade occurred in New York City starting at the Stonewall Inn.
2. In 1978, the original design of the rainbow gay pride flag was created and displayed during the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade. You can thank Gilbert Baker for his design of the flag.
3. In 1981, there was the first Pride march in history in Paris, France.
4. In 2006, Rio, Brazil, broke the record for the biggest pride march. There were 2.5 million who at tended the march.
5. In 2017, the first same sex marriage occurred in Sydney, Australia.

Due to COVID-19 last year, people were not able to fully celebrate all the normal activities such as pride parades, picnics, parties, concerts and more are canceled. However, there will be virtual parties to join and celebrate pride. However, with this year looking better and some people being vaccinated, things are happening this year. NYC's theme for pride this year is "The Fight Continues." This weekend the activities in NYC are a rally, a hour long concert featuring Miley Cyrus, a run, street fair, and a pride march.

If you were assigned to put together a pride event, what would you do for it? Would you do what NYC is doing or something different?

Let us know in the comments what you would do.

I would do a "meet and greet" event where judgments and ignorance are left at the door, provide a safe place for people to meet one another, receive support and encouragement.
