Is it too soon to prepare for tourism again?
Closed

Authorities in Thailand are preparing a plan to ease restrictions on tourists vaccinated against COVID-19,
as the country seeks to revive its tourism industry that has suffered over the past year.

Relaxation measures for vaccinated visitors will be introduced slowly but surely and could include reducing the mandatory quarantine period for all arrivals, from two weeks to three days, for those vaccinated or abandoning it altogether, said Yuthasak Supasorn, head of the Thailand Tourism Authority.

"We have to be fast because we want to start receiving tourists in the third quarter," he told Reuters. The tourism ministry has also requested 100,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for tourism employees in Chon Buri, Krabi, Phang Nga, Chiang Mai, and Phuket.

The five provinces will trial "hotel quarantine" programmes starting next month, offering between 5,000 and 6,000 rooms. There, visitors will be able to move to hotels instead of being isolated in rooms, according to tourism minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn.

The global launch of vaccination campaigns has given hope to the tourism industry badly affected by the pandemic. In 2019, Thailand received around 40 million foreign tourists, who spent 1.91 trillion baht ($63.60 billion). However, last year, Thailand received only 6.7 million visitors.

What do you think of the measures that the authorities are taking for visitors?
Have you ever been to Thailand, or are you planning to go one day?

We should certainly prepare for future holidays abroad but there are still too many variables and different countries seem to have different rules and expectations. I would like to see some definitive rules and lower Covid rates before I fly across the globe.

Whilst I do think it is too early to want to receive tourists, I do sympathise with nations and regions that depend on it for revenue. It is an awkward balancing act. I wonder if they should also be increasing medical capacity or advertising details of it?
.
I have not ever considered Thailand as a holiday destination, although it has a wealth of interesting history and natural attractions.

Yes I believe that it's definitely to early and people are putting to much misguided faith in a yet untried vaccine. No matter how effective it is no one knows how long it will be effective for . Personally I feel that we're potentially taking one step forward and three steps back.
