Did any of your family ever have a house where the kitchen was not attached to the house but in a separate room out back?

My gran's kitchen was in a separate room out behind the rest of the house. It had a covered walkway between the two buildings. Most of the houses in the neighborhood were like that.

That was quite common in the days of wood cooking stoves especially in the south where it would get extremely hot in the summer. Lots of people also had summer kitchens separate from their homes that they used in the summer, of course. But I've never lived in a home where the kitchen was separate. Reply

That’s different. I grew up in a house where the kitchen is on the 2nd floor. That was unique for me. Reply

It sounds like that home was very old and must have been built before there were real kitchens. At one time people cooked in fireplaces and a big common room surrounded the fireplace. Maybe the kitchen at your grandmother's house was built once the fireplace became obsolete for cooking purposes. Reply

No, I haven't but, the house that I live in my grandparents whom built the house did for a bit. The kitchen was the last room of the house to be built on the house and it was added on. Which I find odd because I believe I would want my kitchen built first, you have to eat. Reply

My grandparents' house had two kitchens--one inside (regular kitchen) and a separate kitchen in a smaller building--there was no air conditioning in those times, the the summer kitchen was used during the warmer months in order to not heat up the main home. Reply

I have heard of that; I enjoy watching DIY shows and they somtetimes try to recreate the history (Period) of the house! Reply
