How do you like them apples?

The McIntosh apple is on the decline as they variety isn't very popular with younger generations; it doesn't pay much for apple growers when compared to other varieties. The market share will be very low within 10 to 20 years. Consumers seem to want "sweeter, less acidic and crunchier apples," says Monique Audette, an agronomist and grower who owns a 13-hectare orchard in Dunham, in Quebec's Eastern Townships region.

I prefer Royal Gala- McIntosh's skin is too tough, although the flesh is nice/ Reply

McIntosh apples were always my favourite, so firm and crunchy. But to buy them in the stores now, they are usually not very firm. I find Honey Crisp are the best, but they are so expensive. I buy them once in awhile as a special treat. They are always crisp and a good flavour. Reply

That's funny, i didn't know that. I do like crunchier applies and i think the mcintosh is a drier more grainy type of apple... or maybe i've just had them more when they are overripe! I generally buy gala since that's always the cheapest but fuji are also ones that i love. It's funny how different certain types apples can really taste though. Earlier this year i tried a type that was very "flowery", first time i truly noticed a big difference between an apple that still looked the same as a type i normally eat... Reply
