Is it unethical to serve defrosted food at a restaurant? | The Italian Case
Each year, thousands of tourists flock to Italy and have the opportunity to taste its local cuisine. In some cases, and to their disbelief, they are actually eating frozen food that is presented and served as being freshly made. This approach is adopted by certain restaurants with the pure intention of profit maximization

Under Italian law, serving frozen food in a restaurant while labelling it as fresh is considered fraud. Thus, its legal system is moving towards improving the enforcement of its regulations and punishing those who carry out such a deceptive practice. Those who forego following the rules could be subject to heavy fines. However, this isn’t to say that restaurants cannot sell frozen food, but it is necessary to correctly inform consumers how and when meals are prepared.

The latest case took place in Milan where a restaurant was fined 200 EUR, following an investigation where its freezers were discovered fully stocked of ready meals, despite no mention on the menu that their food would simply be defrosted. Describing the case, a judge added that, “...the availability of frozen food, if not expressed as such in the menu, can be interpreted as an attempt of commercial fraud.”

Do you think restaurants should be punished for deceiving their diners?
Is it right for us to consider this as “commercial fraud”?
How does your country approach this particular kind of issue?
