When we were younger we would always race each other on bicycles. But the only problem I could not ride. So they would have to take time away from racing to try and teach me how to ride.

I liked playing tennis and volleyball in gym class. I remember buying a tennis racket for the class, and kept it for many years to come after graduation. But I never played tennis again, until I was in my 50s, and one day a friend and I went to the park, and played a game. Needless to say, I was not much good at it. I use to play volleyball with the kids, I enjoyed it.

In high school gym we had to learn and play a little bit of everything (tennis, badminton, volleyball, and basketball). We'd spend months on each sport, creating teams and playing tournaments. I loved playing all of them but the ones with the best memories are probably tennis and basketball. Tennis because it was fun and let me live out my childhood dream of being a Williams sister. Venus and Serena really made me want to learn tennis as a young black girl, a sport that didn't have much poc representation and I didn't really associate with black culture much until them (although Arthur Ashe played before them). I was okay at tennis, but it's been a few years since I've played. As for basketball, it would be senior year when my high school gym team won our month long class tournament, a group of 5 girls, one who was on the school's girl's basketball team (there was no trophy, just the acknowledgement).

Didn't get too involved with sports when I was a kid however, I did enjoy playing a bit of softball when I was in high school. Guess I was always more interested in boys over sports! Go figure! :-)

As a young kid, the gym teacher at my elementary school tried to teach us how to play badminton. My gym teacher spent the entire class period by selecting two different students to compete against each other. Eventually, it turns out that I was not very good player at all.. When playing, I was not able to get to the birdie on time and it drops in front of me. Now, I am too old and obese to play any type of sports but I like watching the NBA, NFL, and NCAA on television.

When I was in Elementary School, they taught us Archery as part of our Gym class. The very first time, the teacher demonstrated how to use the bow and arrow, completely missing the target. She then pointed to me, the least athletic person to ever walk the face of the Earth, and said, "Now you try." I threaded the bow, as instructed, lifted it to my shoulder, aimed it at the target and...made a bullseye. She told me to try again - I guess she thought it was a fluke. I did and... made another bullseye. For the rest of the school year, every time we had Archery class, I made a bullseye. Sad thing is, the teacher never showed us how to make a bullseye, just how to thread the bow and aim. I'm very proud of this because, as I said before, I am not good at athletics.

I was also overweight until the eighth grade in school. I never played any sports as my dad would not allow it, because we needed to provide our own transportation and he was not for that. He always stated "that is what the school bus is for", but unknowingly would never pick one up for sports practice.
However, in the seventh and eighth grade, I would classify it as some sport, every Friday, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, ROLLER SKATING was the top event (still went during high school) . I never missed one of those days or nights roller skating until I started working at a drive in concession stand. Today, that is another loss as the roller rink was torn down.

As an overweight child I really didn’t play that many sports growing up.I wasn’t good at sports but I was a good kicker,I played kickball a few times with other kids in the neighborhood. In middle school I could serve the volleyball well sometimes. The team I was on even asked me to serve a few times. That is still a good memory of mine.
