Steel Magnolias, another piece of film history, because with this great cast of characters once we will never see in the same movie again Shirley MacLaine, Sally Field, Olympia Dukakis, Dolly Parton, Julia Roberts,
And Daryl Hannah what a great cast of women.
also Robert harling who played the minister in this movie was also the writer he wrote this as a play within like 2 months after losing his own sister 2 diabetes. So although it never says based on a true story I believe that it kind of is since the movie is about a community with a group of women who Bond they learn to cope with the death of one of their own.
now to Candice review with as the quote from Shirley MacLaine in the movie Steel Magnolias when she says I'm not crazy I've just been in a very bad mood for 40 years and not to forget Dolly Parton's character the only nice thing to say well at least all her tattoos were spelled correctly. Those two quotes I have never forgotten since the first time I ever seen this movie 1987.

Steel Magnolias is one of the most feel good movies of the 1980’s. The story is about six women from a small town in Louisiana who gossip and kid around together, through good and bad times. Through out the movie, there is a combination of succession of funny one-liners and tragedy. These group of women who are friends must deal with husbands who are either absent, depression, or deceased spend their time chattering about other people at the local beauty parlor. At the beginning of the movie, the young bride-to-be Shelby played by Julia Roberts was diagnosed with diabetes. During, I found myself laughing by actresses Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton, Daryl Hannah, and Olympia Dukakis. Sally Field gave worthwhile performance as the strong matriarch of Shelby. The movie turned dramatic towards the end when tragedy hit close knit group of women when Shelby was rushed to hospital and eventually succumb to her illness. When the character played by Julia Roberts died, tears were running down my face. The rest of women bonded over her funeral. I feel that true meaning of this movie is that you came overcome the difficult times in life and death. Maybe some guys feel that it is a chick flick, but to me it is for people who are 18 years of age or over.

Steel Magnolias was poem in the form of a Stage Play written for a sister who died of complications from Diabetes. The author Robert Harling is from Northwestern Louisiana a region I am familiar with which shares alot of characteristics with Texas, a close neighbor. The region is conservative and retains the flavor of the old "Plantation South" supporting a lucrative industry consisting of touring the pecan covered estates complete with old slave quarters. The characters from Harling's play are representative of a select class from this area; the one he is most familiar with. I say this to justify the play's stilted description of this region of Louisiana. Even in this context I found the the relationships shallow and corny when compared to similiar movies of this genre such as Terms of Endearment, Moonstruck, or Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
I have read that the play presents better than the movie adaptation perhaps that is because less descriptionis better to capture this life experience.
All of the actors in "Steel Magnolias " are
incredibly gifted and gave Workmanship performances, however this was not their a best work. I believe that the performances of Shirley Maclain and Olympia Dukakis in the afore mentioned" Terms of Endearment" and "Moonstruck" where superior and heart felt.
In parting I only want to reflect on the sheer irony of Sam Shepard appearing in this poor adaptation of a fair play.
2 Stars.

Steel magnolias was a well acted drama that was dotted with humor and sarcasm. Both Julia Roberts and sally fields gave stellar performances as daughter and mother. Julia’s character is the main one. A young woman with kidney disease that gets married and put her life in danger to have a child. And how the community rally’s around the family when she gets sick and passes from the diseases and having a child. It is well written and expertly performed.

Steel Magnolias is a heartwarming story about the small town lives of 6 Southern Louisiana women. It follows all of their trials and tribulations that happen throughout the years.
Truvy is a beauty shop owner that hires Annelle, a young girl with a troubled past who's looking for a fresh start on the day of Shelby's wedding day.
Shelby and her mother M'Lynn go to Truvy's for their wedding day pampering just as Clairee, Truvy's best friend, arrives to gossip about ladies in their small parish. Then enters the ever-so-charming Ousier (my favorite character), doing what she does best- complaining ... about M'Lynn's husband.
The women's friendships change and grow with time and really enthralled you. After Shelby's wedding, she tells her mother that she is pregnant, and M'Lynn is NOT as excited as Shelby, due to Shelby being a diabetic. Many doctors have told her that she's high-risk, so having children would put a major strain of her kidneys. However, Shelby pleads with her mom saying she would "rather have thirty minutes of wonderful, than a lifetime of nothing special." (My favorite part of the film).
Shelby winds up giving birth to a healthy little baby boy and everything seems as though things are perfect, until Shelby decides to tell the other ladies that not only is she now on dialysis and in need of a kidney transplant, but also announced that her mother M'Lynn is the one giving her a kidney! The procedure goes smoothly, but sadly, 3 short months later, Shelby goes into kidney failure while alone with her young son, and is put on life support. And the family is faced with the hardest decision ever.

Steel Magnolias is one of my most favorite movies of all time. I haven’t seen it in quite a while but it is one that I could watch over and over.
It’s funny, it’s very serious and the cast is perfect together. I love all the characters, but especially Olympia Dukakis and the always funny Shirley McLain. I use the one liner “I love you more than my luggage”.
I think one thing, from this movie, that stood out in my mind all these years is the awareness of how serious diabetes can be.
Maybe I am not the only one that was under the false impression that diabetes was ‘just a normal condition that you might not be able to eat sugar’ and nothing more. That, as we all know, is not the whole story.
It was heart breaking to see how M’Lynn (Sally Field) suffered the loss of her precious daughter. After her pregnancy and leaving her with a sweet grandson, but in exchange it worsened her diabetes condition.
I loved how these women were such good friends, and were able to laugh, argue and yet each still knew they were always there for one another.
It’s a wonderful story of family, friends, good times and extreme sorrow, and yet life does go on. It does change, but it goes on. Hopefully.
Now that I’ve thought about this movie again, I’m going to have to hunt it up on one of the streaming sites and watch it again. It is without a doubt one of the best movies ever.
I wish the Hollywood crowd could or would do something even half this good!

Steel Magnolias is a comic and drama story about a true person.Sally Fields, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine Julia Roberts are some of the stars featured in this tight net friendship that deals with a death that draws them even closer as friend and family. The male figures in the story line don't have much influence in the movie they are mostly fill ins to combine the male figures in the film.I for one loved the movie which was produced in the early 80's a time when after a divorce I could relate to.

Steel Magnolias may be nothing more than manipulative high class soap opera, but it is soap opera that works, thanks to a good script and some first class performances by an excellent cast. If you are looking for edge or your seat drama, you're shopping in the wrong store here. What you do get is a story about relationships. The main focus is the story of a friendship between five women, each character totally different, but very well defined by the five actresses who portray them. There is also a major story about the relationship between a Mother and Daughter, some minor stories involving girlfriend and boyfriend, and husband and wife. It is the actresses who make this movie watchable, Sally Field hits all the right notes as a mother who at times can seem overbearing to her daughter, but as we find out with good reason. Dolly Parton as a beauty shop owner gives her best performance ever here, and for once doesn't try to draw our attention to her anatomy. Shirley MacLaine and Olympia Dukakis are stellar as two women who you are always trying to one up the other, but who deep down really care about each other. The biggest surprise here is Daryl Hannah, who plays a mousy church goer. It is probably her best performance to date. Julia Roberts, in an early role as Sally Field's daughter, does a fine job also.
Although the male roles don't have much screen time, they are still pivotal to the story, and Tom Skerritt, Sam Shephard, Dylan McDermott, and Kevin J. O'Connor, give performances every bit as good as the ladies. It's great to watch a movie where on the surface there doesn't seem to be much happening, but challenges you to listen to the dialogue between the characters. Steel Magnolias is just such a movie, and does it better than most.

Steel Magnolias is an 80's comedic drama based upon a play and real life story of Robert Harling with a powerful cast including Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley Maclaine, Tom Skerrit, Olympia Dukakis, and etc. The movie / story follows the lives of these intertwined, close nit friendships as they experience the comedy and tragedy of life in a Southern town. Furthermore, it provides a view into the world of Diabetes and how a patient ( Shelby - Julia Roberts ) and her family functions with how the disease impacts all aspects of one's life. However, the movie isn't singularly focused on the this story line. The personalities, traits, situations of each person is displayed in a realistic manner with equally realistic life situations, while showing how one come can overcome differences in a community and pull together to support each other. The movie emotionally illustrates love, work, celebration, family, faith, friendships, relationships, life, tragedy, and death. And, the viewer can relate to the characters and situations that they face as we all go through similar experiences in life. It's a soulful look into all of us when we are the most vulnerable like a flower and, also, most strong and resilient like steel. This is a movie that makes a lasting impact with one or multiple viewings.

Steel Magnolias is a classic American comedy drama film based on a true story. The movie is based on Robert Harling’s play of the same name. The name of the film reflects the main messages of the key female protagonists in the movie, which are as beautiful as magnolias but also as strong as steel. Each of the women in the movie faced a death in their family and needed to face it courageously by themselves and with friendship and close bond with each other. The setting is in a southern US town in Louisiana. Annelle, the main female protagonist, is a beauty school graduate. She moves to a small town in Louisiana to work in a hair salon. In the hair salon, she became acquainted with 5 other strong females, all strong in their own rights but also experienced unspeakable tragedy in their life. The movie talks about how each one of the six women dealt with the unexpected tragedies in life in thei beautiful, courageous way. It talks about their strong friendship and how they supported each other along the way. At the end, it’s beautiful as life goes on and new life begins as Annelle gives birth to a baby. The movie is both drama as well as comedy, with star actresses and actors, and is a genuine American classic in the 1980s.
