#WeAsk: How Can We Make the World's Cities Safer for Women and Girls? Let's discuss!
Closed

Dear members,

For Women's Week, Toluna wants to celebrate women and girls all over the globe! Let's discuss some important topics surrounding women, interact with other members and learn what's going on for women of the world.

Everyone deserves to feel safe on the streets, and with women being at a higher risk of violent crimes, it is important to think about what can be done to keep women as safe as possible.

Today's question is: How can we make the world's cities safer for women and girls?

Share your answers in the comments and feel free to create your own content, using #WeAsk in the title.

To be honest this in its self I find to be a problem. Everything is always defined as man and woman. This is everything from work and pay, to personal life etc. "women are faced with lots of problems from how they look, what they are paid, how safe they feel when out. For example eating disorders are affecting more and more men now a days and they have less support compared to women who have them. Pay should matter on gender at all. If your the right person for the job then you get it whatever gender or background and the pay should be the same. A male or female sales assistant get the same pay as long as they do the same job and hours etc as well as high flying jobs like CEO's of companies. I feel that there is a difference between equal rights and equal opportunities and that everyone confuses the two. Tables have turned from when men "ruled" and women were treated as animals or second class citizens and i feel now a days women "rule" and men are the ones who are scared and weak. (ie men are too scared to say or do things in fear that it is seen wrong) Where as what should have happened was look at the past and learn from it not change sides.

Teach all children to have the confidence to say no and have self respect and not just do anything to be 'liked' and ensure that the police and judiciary have real power to get convictions for criminal behaviour and assaults. Have local police who know their communities physically patrolling the streets on foot. Ensure that anyone convicted of any kind of abuse against women and girls gets substantial punishments and are named and shamed.Have a publicly available register of convicted rapists and also for anyone who has carried out any physical assaults. Teach self defence classes for girls in schools and provide much better street lighting

Need to keep every one safe on the streets young and old. Need more police about theses days . I would never want to walk out on my own. Its very worrying when you see young girls going home from a night out ,on there own maybe had a few drinks makes them very vulnerable , They need to be more aware of the dangers when out on own

I think most of crimes happen occasionally just according to the situation and is often unpredictable what is going to happen. Often it depends on the girls' and women's behaviour itself, do they know or not what is going to happen if they go alone in the streets - especially at night and how trustful they are. So I think in order to make world safer place to live, give them knowledge about unsafe situations and cases in which crime may happen.

I think there is not much difference between boys and girls these days. They both need to be told No means No, Self respect and self defence classes. Online protection and that all images on these sites are not true images, not to live up to an ideal that is not real. Ask real people for advice (parent, teacher, social worker or even Police person) not a forum.

More police on the streets, walking, not in patrol cars. Stricter punishment for the perpetrators, they need to know that they won't get away with it. More CCTV in out-of-the-way places. Teach girls self-defence in school and by contrast, teach boys to respect women of all ages. For the perpetrators, make them do community service with victims of crime, see how it effects their daily lives. Make youth clubs popular again, trendy, update them so that they're seen as somewhere cool to go (not tied to churches for instance). Teach girls about self respect, knowing how to judge situations, how to be online and be safe; a lot of crimes are carried out after the girls have agreed to meet someone they met that way!

Educate the youth of today so problems will hopefully diminish for tomorrow. And empower women themselves to learn to be safe and defend themselves if necessary.

It needs to start from birth everyone should be taught from an early age how to look after their selves but also how to be respectful of others
