Are extended warranties really of any value? Do you buy them? Relate any experiences, positive or negative you’ve had with extended warranties.

We normally don’t buy extended warranties but have made a few exceptions. I’ll relate two experiences with extended warranties that make me wonder if they are really worth the added expense.

My brother bought an extended warranty with his new refrigerator. Two years later, it stopped cooling and he called the warranty company. After numerous delays, they finally serviced the refrigerator and replaced the compressor but it still did not work. After five more weeks without a refrigerator involving more delays and phone calls to the warranty provider, they finally agreed to replace it. FIVE WEEKS … I find that totally unacceptable!

We purchased two leather recliners from what is probably the most popular recliner store in America and bought a lifetime leather protection warranty. Just one year later, when the leather was found to be defective on one of the recliners, they refused to replace the chair or make any repairs.

On the positive side, when we bought a car the first year that model was made, we got a warranty and broke even because we had a covered repair the same amount as the cost of the warranty.

Nope...it’s a scam and you have to jump through too many hoops to actually get help Reply

I only do the car warranty and most of the time you get your money back. Reply

I am sorry to hear of your negative experiences. I tend to take a warranty after reading the fine print and basing it on what I am purchasing. Reply

I never used to buy extended warranties. However, with my new refrigerator, I did buy an extended warranty. I hope I don't regret it. I was told by a refrigerator repairman that new appliances are just not made as well or long-lasting as the old appliances The reason is due to the 'electronics' that are used. They are simply too difficult to replace. So, I am going the way of extended warranties these days! Reply

Depends. There have been times we haven't which has been mostly the case. Then there have been times I wished I would have. I think the more expensive the item, it might be a good idea. Reply

No I dont believe they are worth the added cost. I purchased one on a phone and had to wait over 3 weeks for my replacement phone. Reply

No the standard factory warranty has served me quite well and never had a need to purchase an extended one. We tend to know quite quickly whether a product is a lemon or not and needs to be replaced or returned for a refund. Reply
