Do you think it's fair that flags flew at half mast for Whitney, but not considered for baseballs hall of famer Gary Carter?

I disagreed that flags should be lowered to half mast for Whitney, but since they were lowered for her, they should be lowered for Gary Carter.

Flags should not be lowered for any one else but fallen soldiers who died for our country...firemen and policeman killed during call 0f duty....or an elected ex=president or upper elected official who stood up for our country

I know who Whitney was, but never heard of Gary Carter. Sometimes a flag may be lowered in a local town for a local "hero". Lowering for for celebrities seems odd, as it usually is reserved for members of the military or the government. News articles keep stressing that Whitney was "young" ~~~ and to me, 48 isn't "young"; it makes me think of all our truly young people who die in senseless wars everyday. Perhaps our Nation's flags should be flown at half-staff everyday, in their honor! Not to disparage the dead, but Whitney's tragic end is a great teaching tool, if only people would learn. However, since we seldom even learn from our mistakes, we almost never learn from the mistakes of others. Looking at the photos of her the night before, and hearing of her behavior, certainly show someone spiraling out of control! And comparing her death to the murder of Michael Jackson infuriates me! Michael was murdered; Whitney committed suicide by her behavior; maybe not intentionally, but she did it to herself.

When did lowering the flag to half mass become open to everyone? I thought it was for honoring our gov. officials/presidents who have died.

I think that if the people flying the flags agree that is their perogative. Perhaps they were not asked to do this for Gary Carter.

This is what our great country has come to we dont lower the flag for our veterans who have served this country but for celebrities.next if my dog dies and by chance he was famous mayb they might lower the flag at half mast. Our country has lost all its glory and values. We treat celebrities and sportmen or woman with respect while we throw the men and woman serving in the armed forces on the street by foreclosing their homes.

If New Jersey wants to lower their state flag fine, but National flag should be lowered only for Veterans or Statesmen.

I disagree with the practice. Entertainers and celebrities shouldn't have that honor....it should be reserved for war heroes and people that made personal sacrifices for our freedom.

I don't agree with the flags being flown at half mast for Whitney Houston. I think that honor should be reserved for military and dignataries. Where do you draw the line? Anytime there is a loss, it is devasting for the family and loved ones. I don't hink it was proper for a celebrety

Whitney Houston died far too young which is a tragedy. She was loved in her hometown and I think they made the right choice to lower the flags in respect not only for her but her family and the church she grew up in.

Flags should not have been lowered for either.
That honor should be reserved for our Veterans. They have defended our country and deserve our respect. Don't reduce that honor by lowering the flag to half-staff for ANY other individual!!!!
