Do you think it's fair that flags flew at half mast for Whitney, but not considered for baseballs hall of famer Gary Carter?

I disagreed that flags should be lowered to half mast for Whitney, but since they were lowered for her, they should be lowered for Gary Carter.

I know who Whitney was, but never heard of Gary Carter. Sometimes a flag may be lowered in a local town for a local "hero". Lowering for for celebrities seems odd, as it usually is reserved for members of the military or the government. News articles keep stressing that Whitney was "young" ~~~ and to me, 48 isn't "young"; it makes me think of all our truly young people who die in senseless wars everyday. Perhaps our Nation's flags should be flown at half-staff everyday, in their honor! Not to disparage the dead, but Whitney's tragic end is a great teaching tool, if only people would learn. However, since we seldom even learn from our mistakes, we almost never learn from the mistakes of others. Looking at the photos of her the night before, and hearing of her behavior, certainly show someone spiraling out of control! And comparing her death to the murder of Michael Jackson infuriates me! Michael was murdered; Whitney committed suicide by her behavior; maybe not intentionally, but she did it to herself.

I don't agree with the flags being flown at half mast for Whitney Houston. I think that honor should be reserved for military and dignataries. Where do you draw the line? Anytime there is a loss, it is devasting for the family and loved ones. I don't hink it was proper for a celebrety

Flags should not have been lowered for either.
That honor should be reserved for our Veterans. They have defended our country and deserve our respect. Don't reduce that honor by lowering the flag to half-staff for ANY other individual!!!!

I have no idea why the "rules" about lowering flags ever changed. It used to be just for Presidents and other government officials. There were no problems then about whether or not a flag should be lowered.

No, I dont think the flag shouldve been at half mast for Whitney Houston. She was a great entertainer but her life was always in turmoil of one kind of another, drugs, alcohol, abuse. I think the only peple getting this kind of recognition should be those who put their lives in danger sacrifice their lives to keep us all safe. The military, police, firemen. There have been entertainers of greater statute than Whitney that have passed and no one lowered the flags for them.

Complete disgrace for half mast for a druggie. Don't care who the bitch was. Half mast is for those that have given up their life for their country and that's it.

I agree with you - do it for both or don't do it for either one. I also think half mast should only be for people like soldiers, Presidents, etc.

I am not sure why this is an issue . . New Jersey lowered the flag for her, whatever . . . great . . she had one of if the best, if not the best performance of the National Anthem just a week after the first gulf war . . you don't like that . . ok . . this probably won't happen all that often, GAry Carter . . . hall of famer . . born in Culver City, CA . . . not from New Jersey . . . played on the ny mets . . not a New Jersey person . . . why should we lower it for him in New Jersey? . . Fair? What is fair . . I think this is a non-issue . . . but hey . . maybe we should lower the flag all year . . . . will that put this to bed?
