Recently i came across a posting of a certain someone who claims to be a U.S. citizen stuck in another country because of lack of funds to buy a ticket. He claims he recently processed and received a U.S. passport at a U.S. consulate in that country but could not get any further help from them as his mother lost or forgot his a social security number when he was a child. Now i have a lot of concerns about this claim as i do not believe it for one second. i think it is impossible for a US consulate to provide a passport to someone who does not have a social security number. i also believe he may have a stolen passport. I'd like to know what you all think about this.
I've never had a passport and I can't remember what my daughter had to provide when she got hers a year or two ago. But the whole thing screams "SCAM!" to me. The "lack of funds to buy a ticket" is the biggest reason why. Passport or not, I think that the next step will be for this "stranded traveler" to ask for monetary assistance, which I would definitely avoid. A friend of mine had his computer hijacked one time and everyone in his address book got an email that he was stranded in Uganda with no funds because he had been robbed. I don't remember anything about his passport, but this seems somewhat similar to me. (And he had never, ever been in Uganda, of course!) In addition, if he's already received another passport, then what does the SSN have to do with his mother not being able to supply additional help to him? As far as I know, you don't need an SSN to wire money to someone. Doesn't make any sense at all!
if you have an american passport; you would have to be an american citizen; if you are an american citizen you have to have a ss#. this story sounds like a con
I do not think that it is possible to obtain a passport with out a social security number. It clearly states on the documents when applying for the passort that you need a social security number. My guess is the passport was stolen or is a fake.
