Have you ever seen a Water Bridge over a river?

Well, here's one someone sent me. Thought you might be interested in seeing it. Even after you see it, it is still hard to believe! A Water Bridge in Germany. Taking 6 years, 500 million Euros & 918 meters long. This is a channel-bridge over the River Elbe & joins the former East & West Germany, as part of the unification project. It is located in the city of Magdeburg, near Berlin. The photo was taken on the day of inauguration. It's an amazing feat of engineering. Anyone else out there familar with these?

Wow, that is amazing. I have been to Germany but didn't even know that this existed. I will have to go see it next time that I am able to visit.

I found this so fascinating that I looked it up on Wikipedia and found out that the idea had been conceived in 1919! Some pieces were actually in place in 1938, but World War II put the project on hold. During the Cold War, Germany split into East and West and the East German government put the project on hold indefinitely. This water bridge not only helps to cut miles and time off of the previous route, but it also means that cargo doesn't have to be off-loaded and then re-loaded. Parts of the previous route were too shallow for the weight of the carriers. Truly incredible!

I have seen a picture of one before, but for the life of me, cannot remember where it was. It is still an amazing sight, though.
