Over here in the UK, one of the main arguments for keeping the monarchy is that they are very important for tourism. Are they right? Has anyone one on holiday here to see the Queen and Buckingham Palace, and have any of you actually met Her Majesty?
Nope, but I have a friend who is obsessed with the monarchy! He follows them around the world as if they were pop stars. I think he has met most members of the family. They must recognize him by now!
I once saw her pass by when she visited an airfield at the back of my house. I was on my way home from school on my bike, and could not get past the crowds. She wore a distinctive coat which I recognised many times when she was shown later on TV. It was in the fifties, and I have not seen her since.
I live in the UK, however friends from overseas have come over specially to see Buckingham palace and hope to catch a glimpse of a royal so I do think they are good for tourism in London.
I saw the Queen when she passed by the hospital where I was a nurse many years ago. We helped patients on to the balcony so they could wave to her. Personally I have no time for the concept of the Royal Family. I am sure many people would still visit whether we have a royal family or not but whilst they are they will include them in their sightseeing.
I don't really know because I haven't been to London for years so don't know what tourist there is but I have read where the Americans can't get enough of the Royals. They are more interested in the coming wedding than we are so that tells you something.
