I was on my computer one day and I came across a bad web site. As a result, my computer totally crashed. I had lost everything that was saved. I had to reinstall Windows XP and all of my programs. Having said all that, I now make it a habit of saving my pictures and other important files on my USB drive and my media player. Those pictures and files was very deer to me and I get upset every time I think about what happened. You must always backup your files. I would suggest in at least three places with only one of those places being your computer.

I'm so sorry to hear that you lost all those pictures! When you get another computer, you may want to get a 'flash drive'. It's about the size of a lighter and you plug it in to a USB port and download any files you want to keep safe! As you add pictures to your computer, you just plug it in and download the new ones. You always have a back up that way. I got one on Amazon.com that holds 8gb for $25.00. In case you're really interested it's a Kingston Data Traveler 101, 8 gb. It received very high user ratings! It's not a lot to pay to protect your precious memories! :)
