Festival of Britain
In 1951 came my very first big day out with the school, it was to visit the ‘Festival of Britain’ in London.
From what I can remember, there was a complete train full of schoolchildren all met up at Gillingham station, early morning, for the exciting journey to London and the exhibition. The main excitement was the fact that it was almost like being given a lesson in looking after yourself for the day and spending your own money. The exhibition itself was really a bit over my head but I remember odd things about it. However, my main memory of the day was the journey home again on the train, because I had spent what money I had left, on a bottle of Lemonade and some sweets and then spent the hours journey home, scoffing myself until I felt sick, at which point I began to wish my eyes had not been bigger than my belly!! However it was still a part of growing up and learning.
