I must admit that I’ve always had a bit of a weakness for “cheap shops” and when I was growing up, Woolworths was something of a Wonderland for the likes of “Us Kids” – a place where you could buy all manner of useless items that you didn’t realise you needed, until you spotted them on a Woolworths counter. Somewhere along the way, Woolworths lost the plot and went slightly “upmarket” – though any fool (me, in particular) could have told them that this was NOT A GOOD IDEA and, sure enough, Woolworths disappeared from our High Streets. Woolworths was no great loss by that stage in my life because it was no longer a “cheap shop” so I had gravitated to markets where I could continue to buy useless/unnecessary items, but with the added excitement of the vendors’ cries, along the lines of “…and if you can’t see the value in this, you won’t see your way home”! Come the appearance of the various “Pound Shops”, I was back in my element – though the “99p Shop” became my “Cheap Shop of Choice” after I watched or read something-or-other about the shop’s founder, and how he built up The Huge Family Business it has since become…. BUT I AM A BIT DISILLUSIONED NOW…. “POUNDWORLD” seems to be the new Pound-Shop-on-The-Block”, opening up here, there and everywhere”, under banner signage “poundworld – Everything £1” “Me and Him Indoors” happened upon a local newly-opened POUNDWORLD the other day so OBVIOUSLY, popped in and bought all manner of useless items. Then, once we’d gone through the checkout, our bill came to £10.49….. “Ummmm, how can there be 49p on the end?”, I enquired of the young lad on the checkout, this being a POUND SHOP and all that… He looked though my bill and told me that the “Weetabix Fruit and Fibre” had cost £1.49. I didn’t have the heart to make a song and dance, being as how the shop was newly opened and the young assistant might have been in his first job, so I paid up… and then moaned at Him Indoors all the way home, because I don’t even like Weetabix – and he was the one who put it in my basket!
That is annoying- should have been a pound!! I must admit i found some great bargains in there- my son loves these toys called EGGBODS - 7 quid on amazon, a pound in here
I am a bit of a sucker for the cheap shops too. You have to be quite savvy though as you can often find products in places such as Home Bargains for less than they are in the pound shops. You can easily be conned into paying too much for something whilst you are in there. It may only be pence per item, but sometimes can be as much as 17 or 18% more. For example a well know chocolate spread is only 84p in Home Bargains, but the obvious £1 in a pound shop. It all adds up!
I have a disabled grandson with learning difficulties, and he cannot handle money. But the other day he went to the Pound Shop, complained that they did not have a book on level crossings, and bought one on roundabouts, paying his £1:00, and thus making his first purchase! Hooray!
I use Poundshops all the time as you can get some great bargain - my best one being my incredible stock of Options - currently priced at £3.19 in Tesco! Where I live we have both a Poundland and 99p shop as well as Poundstretcher, B & M Bargain, Farm Foods and Home Bargains and as they are all in competition with each other we get some really good bargains. I must admit that I no longer buy any old thing but do buy quite a lot of grocery items from them. We live close to Straftord Upon Avon and when Poundland wanted to open a shop there many locals objected but it is always the busiest shop in the town centre.
I love Poundland and look forward to seeing what new products they have. We only go 1 a month as it is 23 miles from us but always spend at least £10 and always buy my shampoos, soap etc. as they are s much cheaper and you get top brands. My husband got some varnish for our fence which was a real bargain. We also buy their razors and razor blads there as my husband says they last as long and are as good as the top brands.
I do like these cheap shops, but the trouble with these shops in this town, is that there is no other type of shop to go to. I do find the goods are mostly rubbish.
