I think that I realized that I was an adult on the day that my husband asked my Dad for my hand in marriage. We were twenty four years old and after he asked my father, my Dad called me into the room and just from the look on his face I knew that I had gone on to a place that he seemed a little more distant to. We have been married for almost twenty five years and my Dad was never far from my daily thoughts, but his look on that particular day made me realize where I was in my life.
I left home to go to university and a year later my younger sister came to visit in her summer holiday. One day we were getting ready to go out and she asked me whether or not she should take a jacket. I was a bit stunned but all of a sudden realized that I was the "adult" in the group so to speak so I was supposed to know these things. Your question made me stop and think about it; I guess being an adult means being the decision maker.
When I got my first full time job, when I was 16, because I had to start paying rent to my grandparents then too. Well, I wanted to pay them, not I had to.
when i moved out, when i was 18, i realized i was on my own and had to live my own life, without any help and without anyone telling me what to do and what not to do. I am 35 now, still struggeling with a lot of stuff and still trying to get help when needed, it is hard being grown these days, specially when there is people around that are trying to tell you how to live your live, how to spend your money and what to do when you are off. It sucks. once you realize you are grown but still have someone that is trying to control your life that is when you try to break free. You are grown and should be able to make your own decisions but how can you be grown if there is always someone in the background that wants to tell you what to do and what not to do. or if you have a 30 year old still living with his parents... they call theirselves grown but they are not.
