Just read that they want to introduce a black box to see how young drivers are driving .It would moniter their speed and safety ,which would then reward them by reducing their car insurance. Seems a good idea . I also feel that when you get over a certain age would it not be a bad idea to bring in a new form of test where every year or so people over the age of 65 could partake in a test to prove they are roadworthy. My neighbour who is in his 80"s drives on the kerb at times. Im not being ageist but surely some form of test would benefit them and others . How does everyone else feel?
i don't really like the sounds of it. most old people are likely just making mistakes. i would also not trust these monitors to fully understand the circumstances. what seemed like unsafe driving to the box may have been necessary or an error (of the box). and you can tell if they start forcing it on some people, it will eventually be the same for everyone. i am a safe driver and don't speed, but i still don't like the idea.
You can be a very young 65 or a very old 65 depending on your outlook in life. I do not necessarily think it should start at 65. Currently you can renew your licence every 10 years. Once you reach 70 I think you need a medical. Maybe it would be a good idea that when you need to renew your licence some sort of exam should be performed to ensure drivers still feel confident about their driving skills. Alot of drivers would love to update their knowledge because knowledge is power and confidence can make a big ifference when driving.
The logistics of re-testing everyone over a certain age would be pretty daunting, given that there can be quite a wait for a test appointment as it is. If you are going to go for re-testing, I think it would be at least as important to include young, inexperienced drivers whose confidence often far exceeds their ability. I can still remember what it's like to be a young driver and think you know it all; luckily the worst that happened to me was a couple of scares with no harm done. Young or very old: who is the most likely to be showing off to their mates or using their phone while driving?
I think a car can provide independence for people of all ages. There are good and bad drivers in all age groups so I would not single out any group in particular for retesting.
