How do you deal with the pain of braces?

I got my top braces on Monday ( April 2, 2012) and my mouth is killing me!!! I got Orajel and Tylenol, but on of the worst parts is that the end of the wires keeps rubbing on the side of my mouth, and it really hurts. I don't know what to do, but I have got to learn to live with braces, I mean sometimes the pain is really bad, like this evening, I put 2 cotton balls in my mouth, hoping the wires would quit poking me, and the cotton balls would feel like pillows, but that didn't work at all. I really don't know what to do, it seems like there is nothing I can do for my mouth to quit hurting. Please ANY suggestions would be VERY VERY helpful :) Thanks ♥Hey whats up♥

I've never had braces. Glad to hear they are getting better!

Thankyou evryone! I went to my dentist the Thursday of the week that I got them, and they trimmed the ends of the wires, and that REALLY helped, the blisters went away, and they didn't really hurt much at all after that.

It's been over twenty-five years since I wore braces on my teeth, but I remember the pain of adjusting to them. I didn't take anything for the pain. I remember the wires poking and cutting into the sides of my mouth, the same as what you described you are experiencing. Unfortunately, all of the advice I can think to give is to tough it out. Eventually your mouth will get used to the braces and wires. Other than that, maybe the orthodontist could trim the wires back a bit where they're poking out. The only other thing I recall is wax. Were you given any wax strips? Perhaps a bit of wax over the ends of the wires and other irritating parts would help.

How about the visit to your dentist. He/ she will give you a good advice.

This is tough, you might try eating some ice cream or putting an ice pack on your jaw, it might numb some of the pain.
