Prescription charges set to rise by 25p in England from April 2012.

I am perturbed by this news for two reasons: first of all because it is an increase in a tax upon the sick, who by definition are often the poorest and most vulnerable members of society. Secondly, other parts of the UK, who pay the same levels of tax as the rest of us, are exempt from these charges , and I don't think that is fair. How do you feel?

I consider myself lucky to be over sixty and thus get my prescriptions for free.

It has happened in the us . Every time i go to get a prescription filled it seems to be more money. I found out recently if you get a 90 day supply it will cost you less rather than keep refilling every 30 days.

I think it is unfair as other parts of the UK do not pay for prescriptions as you say ,but thats the government again they don't care about everyday people

I agree 100% my parents rely heavily on prescription medication and often struggle to pay the fee's even though they do NEED these medicines so they have no choice but to pay up, also having a child who has recently been diagnosed with several intollerances and allergies to wheat, yeast, lactose and gluten to name a few i have learnt that some are allowed prescriptions to be able to afford to buy these foods that are "free from" a small loaf of "free from" bread is £3 which is very expensive, it's not as if my child has a huge variety to choose from either, he has to have these free from foods or basically nothing and it is finacially very hard.

It's never been a secret that England seems to have higher rates of taxation than other parts of the UK. Unfortunately, with costs rising and government revenues falling (high earners registering businesses abroad, etc, to evade tax) this is somewhat inevitable. The same would also be true of public transport. Those who cannot afford a car face rising bus and train fares. If successive governments (including this one) had found a more effective way of screening genuine claimants from others, such increases may have been less.

I guess everythings price is increasing so this is expected, however you are right the increase will be difficult for many, i have always paid for my prescription but after having a baby i have been lucky to get it free for a while.

When you say other parts of the UK you mean Wales & Scotland so we are subsidising them. Also GP's are sometimes only giving 28 days supply instead of the old 56 days. However luckily it doesn't affect me because mine are free. I did use to have a pre paid prescription card which saved alot of money.
