Can someone explain the current situation in Greece to me please? I can understand some elements but not the whole situation.

I am really confused about this. I understand that due to (allegedly) poor Governmental leadership that Greece is on the verge of bankruptcy, but that as a member of the European Union they have already received a huge cash advance to help them out of their financial situation from a central fund which originated from other Member States. I also understand that this amount was apparently insufficient to meet Greece's immediate shortcomings and that their Government has requested an additional amount. This is a matter of some contention as some Member States are refusing to agree to advance any further funding, believing that there will continue to be further requests for funding and the concern is that Greece will never be able to repay the colossal amount loaned to them. So I think I can understand that part. What I really cannot grasp, is that the Greek people don't want money from the European Union and as a result there have been terrible riots there. Are they rioting because in rebellion to their Government's reputed incompetence? Do they think the situation would have been better had they had a different Government? I have seen posters stating that they don't want handouts, they want jobs. Do they think they are alone in this Global recession? What do they think will happen if they DON'T get any further aid? I would genuinely like to know the answer to the above questions and for clarification of the situation as it just doesn't make any sense to me so I must have gotten it completely wrong. I look forward to any enlightenment that can be offered as I would very much like to understand.

I'm afraid I can't explain it either as I don't watch anything about it and the news really doesn't tell you enough.

Hey, who knows what goes on in these governments and what they are getting up to, it does seem that there is not a country in the world that has a decent government running them. I really think monkies could do a better job :)

I ONLY GIVE THE OPINION TO ADD POINTS IN YOUR ACCOUNT.

........sorry l had to leave.......Payment of taxes, retirement at a sensible age and other budgetary compliance with the newly signed European bank monitoring Treaty will show whether they really have the ability to sort out their own terrible mess and be worthy Euro members. I fear they will not have the ability or incliniation to do it. I think many of therm know it secretly as well, but instead of blaming themselves which is where the fault actually lies, they typically blame everyone else as well, you do have to laugh really. They have even suggested that Germany owes them more war reparations money- just who do they think has been shouldering the burden of their debt this far already!!!! No they really need to get out asap and return to the Drachmae. They are facing years of strife whichever way you look and if they revert to type rather than try and adopt Northern European social systems they will suffer less pain. There are a great number of honest tax paying hard working Greeks under the cosh out there at the moment and my sympathies go out to them. The blame for it all really attaches to those moronic politicians who originally thought all countries behaved in the same manner when clearly they didn't.

I am by no means a Greek person but think l may be able to offer a glimmer here. The Greek nation was never in a sound enough state financially to enter into the Eurozone. It got in because their true debt level was hidden from the European member states. They never had an economy fit for purpose and arguably never will. They have been offered funding not out of any sense of wanting to help out Greece but in order to save the Eurozone a scheme many politicians have invested time, energy and reputation in. France and Germany are to hold elctions very soon, l leave you to draw your own conclusion on that one. The Greek people have historically retired early, some at 35 years, have pension schemes that can be handed down when a person dies and not many pay any taxes at all. You might agree with me that is an existence that sounds like heaven doesn't it, allied to an industrial infrastructure that leaves a lot to be desired in terms of output capacity. The Greeks l think see the Euro as being responsible for all their current sufferings, and presumably want to return to the way things were before their economy was put under the microscope. Payment of taxes, retirement at a sensible age and other budgetary compliance with the newly signed European treaty will show.

As far as i can see their government was totally reckless - i dont blame the people who voted as they did it in good faith. BUT countries that borrow and never think about the consequences are just the same as individuals who do it!
