Does anyone else think the standard of english being taught these days is poorer than when they were at school.

Spelling in this country is steadily becoming worst is our education services failing our children and what can be done to improve or turn things around

I think it quite possibly is, I know that there are a hell of a lot of people out there that cannot spell, that's for sure.

I have no young family so I can not comment on how well they are taught these days, but yes standards do seem to be less.

Oh yes, I have seen this at first hand. A very clever intelligent girl came to work for me for work experience before she went off to uni. She was great at her job but the only problem was that nobody could read her writing, it was a complete scrawl. When I asked her about it she said that the teachers said it wasn't important as long as she got the answers right. My reply was how do they know that the answers were right if they couldn't read them. So she couldn't spell and she couldn't right legibly but she passed her exams with flying colours, it just beats me.

I blame text messaging for the drop in the standard of spelling, too many shortened words are used.

I agree, lots of young people can't spell. I think the style of teaching now, isn't as good as it used to be.
