Hospital appointments

I took my mum to her hospital appointment yesterday. We were there for nearly 5 hours, saw 2 doctors - each for 5 minutes - and had an x-ray done. Is this normal ? I was appalled and am really glad I'm healthy.

That does seem an awful long time to be somewhere if you have an appointement. I know in fracture clinics appointments will be pushed back if they have any urgent, new cases come in. Reply

Yes, this seems to be the norm, you wait all that time for a few mins. I know they are busy, but it is a bit much. Reply

This is normal and this is why surely the NHS has to change. What was happening while you were waiting? Did you see alot of people walking about with bits of paper looking busy. That's what happens when I go to my hospital. If you had an appointment you shouldn't have to wait 5 hours. Some people are trying to justify their jobs. Reply

It's normal for many hospital appointments from what I can make out, although I have been lucky enough not to need many. My mum has been going in for chemo every 3 weeks - the treatment itself takes around 30 minutes, but each time she has to wait 4-5 hours to be seen which seems bizarre. Reply

Yes this is pretty normal and I think it is a disgrace, I have my daughter at the hospital this afternoon and am expecting to be there hours Reply

Yeah, that sounds about right. My husband was supposed to go in today (Friday) for his cattaract surgery, only for the nurse to call late Thursday afternoon to say it has been cancelled and moved. Of course it had! I was just about to head out the door to walk the dog when the phone rang, hubby can't walk to get to it, so it was a near thing and we may have found ourselves driving all the way there to find the appointment cancelled. It's fun, ain't it? Reply

I bet it was the XRay department that held you up? My local hospital is badly let down by its shambles of a department. Reply

That's dreadful, but typical and the way things are set to go they will get worse. Though I have a pen-pal in the USA and he says it can be as bad there at times. I do hope after all that waiting around they at least sorted your mum out. Reply
