Tesco forced to cease exploiting the jobless

After an outcry on social media websites this week, Tesco were forced to change a job advert looking for permanent workers in exchange for expenses and jobseeker's allowance.

It was an outrage that they ever put the advert out in the first place. Tesco is one of the UK's most profitable companies and its chief executive was paid a reported £6.9 MILLION pounds last year.

There is no excuse for them failing to pay proper rates for the job instead of exploiting people in long-term unemployment. But the scandal should make us wonder how widespread this practice is, and whether the government is putting pressure on the unemployed to accept derisory job offers in order to massage appalling jobless rates.

Do you shop at Tesco? If so, how do you feel about the way it treats its staff?

I for one do not & would not shop at Tesco's. They claim this & that but their prices are not the cheapest and the products in my opinion are not the best. The other thing they do is ride rough shod over people and don't care who they offend or hurt when they apply to build a new store or an Express shop. Councils just seem to give in to them even when they know that it will take business away and maybe close the small shop. All Tesco say is how many jobs they are going to create.

A victory for people power - it is great to hear as so many people are against the greed of Cameron, the bankers and their ilk but the Media presents that in that old phrase "there is no alternative".People often dispair about the times we live in and say "it is all wrong but we have no power and change nothing" but this shows that we have the power tio be the big,the powerful and the rich ! Before the minimum wage came out I remember the likes of Tescos saying they could NEVER afford to pay theie young workers these 'too expensive wages' (but could not afford to pay bosses much, much higher wages !) They have not gone bust in the mean time remember we are many they are few.

I shop at Tesco and I also did a YTS when in my teens. I don't really see that there's much difference with the current scheme apart from I could earn a bonus £5 a week if the company I was working for were pleased with me. The normal pay was just £25 so it was quite a boost. I did do study for a day a week on the course too though and ended up with a qualification in speed calculation. That's pretty much worthless now but can come in handy when I need to do calculations quickly. It's like touch typing but just with a numerical keypad. The references I earned also helped my job prospects and I soon found a full-time permanent job. If the current scheme is voluntary I don't see the problem. Yes, companies probably are exploiting the free labour but even paid employees end up being exploited some way. Besides, they will come away with experience and a reference which will help their prospects.

Now be fair, Tescos can't be expected to dip into their half a billion pound profits (wasn't that half year profits too?) to pay insignificant things like wages when the Government is STUPID enough to pay for them! I think it is an absolute disgrace! The point of jobseekers allowance was to help to get people back into work and also to help employers who cannot really afford to employ people even though their businesses may be more productive with extra staff. I think the Government are just so desperate to hide the true unemployment figures, that they will do anything to get people working. At the end of the day, the Government is still paying but the official unemployment figures appear lower. The government need to lay down dome more rules in relation to this particular loophole. But SHAME on Tescos in not wanting to pay a wage that they can easily afford. Keeps the shareholders happy I guess. It hasn't done Tesco's public image much good though has it? Maybe they should have thought it out a bit more carefully to begin with. And these people who are making this type of decision are the ones who are being paid the "big bucks". Doesn't seem right does it?

This is nothing short of slavery in my opinion and all companies who even comtemplate this should be boycotted by all decent people.
