What punishment should be given to those who get caught writing graffiti on our beautiful bridges and storefronts?

I think they should pay a hefty fine. This money should be placed back into the community to help people in need. They should also be made to remove the graffiti by painting over it or any other way that is deemed necessary. For second + offenders, I suggest another hefty fine and 30 days in county lock-up. I don't know how effective these punishments would be, but I bet it would deter people from doing this. (for a while anyway). But then, they will find some other way to annoy us (me).

I would have to agree with you. But not many people get punished for anything these days.

I do not think if there is a harsher punishment it would stop people from putting graffiti on things. I do agree with you! They need a hefty fine, should have to paint over whatever they "tagged", and should have to do several hours of community service. If they are a repeat offender, they should have to do everything listed above and a stay in the county jail.

I don't think any punishment will stop them from doing it. It's a game to them.

In some ways graffiti is a form of art and can be quite beautiful... there are corners of some cities where it seems appropriate... but mostly I agree with you, the "artists" choose to simply defile an otherwise beautiful area. They should be treated as trespassors I suppose and should pay restitution and do community service I think. All petty criminals should be forced to do something constructive for the community and get an eye opening look at the work that goes on to keep the community functioning.

I think they should have to either pay a hefty fine or I think they should have to do alot of community service washing and repainting grafiti from the city where they live

I think that some of these are beautiful and they should be left along, only because kids are showing off their talent, but some are very nasty, they should be given time in jail for destorying public property.

I think it's usually young folks, not always, but if it is- I would make them hold a sign stating why they're being punished .. then have them paint over the graffiti... If older persons committed the crime, jail time..

I used to live in New Jersey, not all that far from New York City, and it was amazing the amount of graffiti you would see. It was really not an attractive sight, to say the least. If you like ink and art, then get some tattoos!!!!! Seriously, though, I think that this issue should be taken much more seriously than it has in the past. I remember seeing trains, etc. in New York covered in graffiti. Surely security camera's can take this more seriously, and save the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars annually for graffiti removal and maintenance of these roads bridges, trains, etc. that are involved.

Run spikes through their wrists into the wall, then let everyone paint on them? Or am I being a bit "mean"?
