Should sugar be regulated like alcohol and tobacco?

Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco have concluded that sugar is poison and like alcohol and tobacco is not necessary, easy to abuse and deadly and disabling for far too many people. They suggest taxing foods that are high in sugar as well as restricting advertising on such foods. I disagree with their viewpoint because it is not the governments place to dictate what we can and cannot eat. I mean what's next, regulating foods that are high in sodium and/or fat? What do you think about this?

Over control I call it. Sugar is a natural substance, especially in it's raw form, and so I think if it was encouraged for us all to eat more of the less processed sugar, the harm that excess consumption can cause would be lessened.

I think this would be a step too far. The Health Police are getting carried away here in the uk, trying to force us to eat and drink healthily.

Hi there, my partner and l went to the Sandals resort at Halcyon Bay in St Lucia in January 2011. We loved the laid back and dated atmosphere, and the range of foods there. What we found difficult to anticipate had been the high sugar content of a lot of thre essentially American dishes that are far sweeter than we eat here in Great Britain....... We do see sugar as empty calories and as such best avoided wherever you are able. A 2 pound bag of sugar will last us a year or two typically.

I am aware that too much sugar can lead to serious health issues. However, I also believe that each person should know to regulate their own consumption of sugar. I believe that educating children while they are young, on the effects of excessive consumption of sugar, salt and fat would be the best stratergy. In the same way educating children on the adverse effects of alcohol and narcotics would also ha

That will be the day when the goverment tells me that I can not eat sugar. A person can control how much sugar they have to eat all on their own !

Everyone decides if he/she has to regulate sugar or doesn’t. Actually, this is the same about alcohol and tobacco.

I don't think sugar should be regulated! It's okay to have sugar, just watch how much sugar you eat during the day!
