It has been a while that we have had such a party but traditional party games did the trick. Reply

In my area there is a small children's petting zoo. You could take the kids there for an hour or so and then there's a park next door where you could have ice cream and cake. You would need a couple of adults to act as helpers at the zoo and a couple of helpers to stay at the park.
Also, there is a place in my area called wild things. Kids can climb ladders, jump in a ball pit and all kinds of stuff since everything is padded. They have areas for the different ages, then there is a place for you to have ice cream and cake. My nieces loved this place when they were little. It was inside so not to hot which is an issue if your child's birthday is in August and you live in California.
Hope your son has a happy 5th a great milestone not to go unnoticed.

I would just play things like you mentioned. Musical chairs is good, sleeping lions, pin the tail on the donkey or maybe face painting too Reply

i haven't managed to read through all your posts so i don't know if its been mentioned, but you can do a theme party where you can pick your son's favorite cartoon and get the kids to dress up and also you can get a pinata and fill it up with lots of sweets Reply

Hide loads of small toys or sweets before the party. It will keep them out of mischief for quite a while and give you a quick breather too. Blind man's Buff good too but it is best to have an adult as the blind man. We used to take a big picnic to the local park so the kids could run around madly too, but that depends on where you live and how many adults you have to help you. Whatever you do the kids will have a great time. Reply

My daughter turns 5 too and we are thinking of a soft play party for her and her friends, she is going to a party at the weekend and they have rented a community centre and are having tyrampolines and bouncy castles but I couldn't justify that cost Reply

My grandson is 5 tomorrow and he is having a soft play party. He and his friends will all run around and play on the equipment and then they are all taken into a room and get something to eat and sing happy birthday and play party games like pass the parcel etc. He has also had fire engine parties and had a clown to the house party !!
