i tend to start with nonfood items and then move towards the groceries for the same purpose as above, to not let anything melt or sit to room temperature. i also tend to spend a chunk of time browsing those 5 dollar dvds. :-)
It depends on if I am matching prices. I will go get the items I am matching prices on first usually. I tend to go get the groceries that aren’t perishable first, then browse around the rest of the store to see what kind of bargains I can find. Then I will go get the cat food and dog food that we need as it takes up quite a bit of room in the cart (usually end up putting some on the bottom of the cart). Then I will go check the dairy, meat, and frozen items last unless we’re getting something from the deli and then it’s the last thing we get.

Since I live in a heavily populated area (nearly 40,000) we have two Super WalMarts but I rarely buy perishables there since Safeway and Albertsons have lower sale prices than WalMart. Admittedly, Walmart's day to day prices are slightly lower than the grocery stores but I still buy far more groceries at Costco than WalMart because Costco carries items that neither Walmart nor the grocery stores but I do pick up perishables last at any store where I shop and I always have a cooler in the back of my car. I have noticed that having a Costco, two Super Walmarts, two Safeways, an Albertsons, and a QFC has finally driven one of the large independent grocers out of business.
I shop with a list now so only go in for specific items and not get distracted browsing---What I found out I spend thousands less and have less purchases that are never used or end in donations in under a year. Doing this I find more time for doing more--- in and out of stores in under 15-20minutes
When shopping in Walmart, we tend to go in a giant circle. We head down the toothpaste aisle then the toy aisle, then the electronics, the dog food, cleaning supplies, then the fridge and canned goods sections followed last by frozen goods and produce and of course the occasional candy snacks at check out.
When I go in Walmart the way I start out is by going to the shampoo and soap side first. Then I make my way around to the food and make my list to go diary first, then meat down most the food aisle then the frozen right before the fruit. Of course I look at the stuff by the cashier. But if I have any of my nephews with me I will find a way to skip pass the video game and the toy aisle.
