I feel like that all of the time sadly. Only because I feel that people don't appreciate books at all. I remember my old English said, "there is a book for everyone, you just have to find what suits you..even if it takes forever." I abide by this quote all of the time. It's true for everyone. Just saying.
Same here everyone has a book out there for them its just a matter of what. First book I ever read other then a kid book was flowers in the attic, and i got hooked. I read it so many times I could qoute any part of the book from page 1 to the last. I can also say my reading comprehension levels went from really poor 1st grade in 4th grade because of a horrible school that just passed anyone along, to 8th grade, by highschool i was doing college, by college i was told i could teach it. Of al those that took college entrance exam at the same time I had the highest score the councelor said he ever saw.
I display my love for books like the badge of honor it is. Books give us the opportunity to experience emotions privately. It's just you and the printed page. You are free to feel whatever you wish while delving into a book. You are free to join the story or sit back and ridicule the lives contained within those pages. What a laborious and fulfilling journey it has been searching for the 'perfect' book.
What would life be without books? Knowledge, inspiration, humour, imagination and just plain escapism: there's something for everyone if they look hard enough. The joy of being able to put the troubles of day to day life aside and immerse yourself in someone else's universe, even if it is just for a while. No one should ever be ashamed of being able to read, although it is sensible to exercise some critical judgement of what you read. Just because something is in print does not make it infallible.
Like I presume the rest of the people who were moved to respond to your question, I too enjoy reading. In addition to finding it informative, I also read a great deal because I find it relaxing. I have never been ashamed of any book that I read or that I enjoy reading and no person in my recollection ever tried to make me feel ashamed on either count. What I have experienced, however, is some disappointment when someone else has not enjoyed or "gotten into" a book which I had throughly enjoyed.
I enjoy reading very much and really do not care what anyone thinks about it! Be proud that you enjoy reading, think about it you're the smart one who wants to keep expanding your knowledge and if someone makes you feel bad about it then they should feel ashamed by encouraging negativity. I don't read as much as I would like too but find time when possible and I admire anyone who enjoys reading, learning and scrabble used to be a favorite game of mine when I was a kid! Okay sorry I got a little of your topic but really felt the need to reply to your question!
I love reading books, but not all of my friends do. I am not ashamed of liking books. I respect if others don't like reading and hope that they respect that I do like reading. No need to be ashamed of your opinions!
I read, a lot. I can't get enough of books, in fact I am working on writing a fantasy style series. I am NOT ashamed because I read, it shows that I am intelligent and have a more creative mind than most people who do not read. There is nothing to be ashamed of, unless you are reading little kids books or exclusively smut novels. I wouldn't worry about people thinking badly of you because you read. People do not appreciate books the way they used to, but the Kindle is helping with that!!
I've never been ashamed of what I was reading except sometimes when I used to read horror. I don't know why I felt that way though. I've always been proud to be an avid reader, grateful that I can read, and happy to have come from a family of librarians. There is always a book or twenty around.
