There were several genres and each in their own way were individual!
The 'Greaser' look, this was for the biker boys and girls, black leather, smelling of oil, 'heavy metal' music and the 'gigs' i did for them usually featured 'born to be wild' by Steppenwolf, loads of Black Sabbath and Status Quo ending with 'Land Of Hope And Glory', honestly!
Then there were the 'Skin heads' Reggae, Reggae and more Reggae, jeans worn with braces and 'Doc Martin' shoes, otherwise known as 'Bovver Boots'!
Next on the social scale were the kids of '60's hippies, Musk oil and petunie oil were the perfumes, long hair and clothes from charity shops except for expensive 'Kaftan' coats were the fashion.
Moving on we had the 'new look' kids, they bought their clothes from 'Dorothy Perkins' and 'Top Girl' and looked lovely, makeup was pastel and sparingly applied. 'Tank Tops', 'Boob Tubes' and 'platform' shoes were their domain!
Well dressed guys wore flowery shirts, flairs, cravattes and wore 'Brut' unless they were 'hippie', jeans and t - shirt were then in favour!
So they were well dressed, usually, and enjoyed good music, that was to change when the 'Punk Years' arrived in the late '70's', but that's a new story!!!
Ok, boys and girls of the seventies, let's see if you remember! For me the 'Disco Years' started in 1971, co - incidentally the day and year we went 'decimal' on the 15th February!
It didn't seem that special at the time, in fact, it started very quietly with a lot of reggae adored by the 'skinheads'!
Dave and Ansell Collins, Judge Dread, Elizabethan Reggae Etc.
Then something happened, i think 'Tyrranosaurus Rex', later to become 'T.Rex' headed by Marc Bolan started things off with 'Deborah', Ride A White Swan and 'Metal Guru'.
Slade invited us to 'Cum On Feel The Noize' and said 'Gudbuy T' Jane' before that immortal classic 'Merry Christmas Everyone'.
The girls used to faint over Donny Osmond and 'Puppy Love' also Dr.Hook And His Medicine Show with 'Sylvias Mother'.
The tartan clad Bay City Rollers kept the girls happy whilst the lads did the 'Flying Angel' to Status Quo!
Of course, no one at the time knew about Gary Glitter's ways so he was very much 'hero worshipped', to become rightly vilified later!
Remember Barry Blue, 'Dancing on a Saturday Night'?
Showaddywaddy and, of course, Elton John, The Bee Gees and Leo Sayer!
i think the modern day army is a well run organisation, sure they have had their problems what with the quality of their weopons and other gear and maybe their are questions behind our involvemant in iraq but i do think it is a job that needs doing and is currently a job that is being done well.
I know that the press is always negtive about our teens but there does eem to be so many more problems than when I was a teen, our area has been plagued by gangs of teens being violent, destrutive and disruptive. I know that all teens don't fall into this category and that there has always been some problems with teens throughout the years: teddy boys, mods and rockers, acid droppers etc.
I think if you hand teens some responsibility that they will ste up to the mark. S many are leaving school unsure of where to go. If they had a year of experience wth various aspects of community life: spending time with lonely elderly or disabled people who are housebound and don't have many visitors (only if they want visitors), doing diy for community members, cleaning parks, fund raising for local schemes, helping with childrens/disabled/elderly groups, a couple of months work experience with a local business person etc... they will get a chance to feel more valued, gain an insight into peoples lives, have a number of experiences to influence their future career choices and feel part of the "community" to name but a few of the advantages. It will also give us chance to rebuild communitie again.
the other day i had a shitty message from a woman with seven kids cause she couldn't afford seven children, fair enough it was just spam but it got me thinking. i think people should only have as many kids as you can afford to comfortably keep, as its not fair on the kids if they have to go with out as there parents can't afford things. i believe peopel have a right to big families, but they shouldn't moan to others about it. i could easily love ten children but i know right now in my life i can just afford the one, so instead of just having am other baby i think about what my son would go with out. just wanting some more opions. maybe i am just been narrow minded.
Yes i do believe that law in Britain is too soft compared to other countries. E.g. if somebody breaks into your house and you attack them you will be procecuted and they can claim compensation. Something must be done and fast before the country gets out of control!!
This used to be a country where if you done the crime you did the time, now it is slap their wrists and send them on holiday. I was given a choice when i was a lad join up or go inside, I joined up. changed my life, perhaps thats what we need now
It used to be tradition that at the end of a great night out everyone would conga round the disco, club or wherever they were, and often out into the street! Do they still do it? The last time I danced a conga was at a friends wedding. It all gets a bit frantic though, doesn't it? And nobody seems to stick to the proper routine of one, two, three, kick either, and that's what makes it so much fun! It has to be up there with the birdy song for stupid dances, but it's been around a lot longer than that. Go on, when was the last time you let your hair down and conga'd down the street?
