The topic on here about whether you drive slowly past horses made me realise I'm not sure what to do when cycling past them. I'm hoping someone on here who rides horses on the road could advise me.

The problem is that on a bicycle I'm so quiet that horse and rider might not realise I'm coming up behing them until I'm actually passing them. Should I ring my bell when I'm still well behing them (say 50 yards back) or would that risk spooking the horse worse than finding a cyclist suddenly appear in its peripheral vision. Should I call out instead?

Once, I was pulling out to overtake a horse on my bicycle, when I hit a bump in the road and my bike suddenly gave out a very loud squeek. The horse spooked and ran up the grassy bank for about 20 yards before being brought back under control.

I'm hoping that some experienced horse rider on here will advise me of what they would prefer a cyclist to do when coming up on a horse from behind so as not to surprise it.

has anyone else ever had the problem i seem to have no matter where i go, my sister and i took my young nephew, and my son to the cinema, only to have the inconsdierate man behind constantly kicking my seat, no matter how many times i asked him to be a little bit more considerate, and not to kick my seat,he just continued as if i hadnt said a word, i woulnt mind but he was in his mid 40's to early 50's at least. i get this if i go on a bus, a plane, the cinema, even if i attend my sons annual shows at school. it is so annoying, why cant people be more considerate towards other people.
does anyone else get this or is it just me?
hope all you fellow tolunies have a lovely weekend.

I have experienced cinema rage before. I was watching a film with my friend when we were twice showered with sweets thrown from the back row. After the second time, my friend got an usherette to throw them out. I think she was right in doing so.

I enjoy going to the cinema but i think its so expensive! Down where i live in Kent our local cinema charges £7.35 for 1 person! When you can buy the dvd a month later approx £10 and as many people can watch it as you like. The popcorn/drinks/sweets are also a rip off and now they dont allow you to take in your own food. I agree its a treat to go to the cinema but so expensive

Although I have very little experience of either, I prefer Skiers. Snowboarders have far too much attitude and act like they own the slopes from what I have seen and they cause a bit of a nuisance. Skiers are usually much more relaxed and are generally more considerate of other slope users, but then they are usually of an older, more respectful age. This is all based purely on what I gather from the TV though, I have never actually been to a Ski resort, and only ever been to one fake slope in the UK, and that was years before Snowboarding arrived, so my views have been shaped by travel shows and the like.
delinquentduckOpinion by delinquentd...
I really dont think there can be an actual debate as to who is the best! I'm a skier, all of my freinds are snowboarders, they think some of the stuff I do is way better than stuff you can do on a board (most kicker tricks for example) and I think they look way better on rails and jibbing in general! Snowboarding has however saved skiing from its downfall by bringing about newschool skiing, I just wish the IOC would recognise it and get halfpipe in the Olympics! Although I respect both sports immensly I prefer skiing and will always be a skier!

This was sent to me in an email from our good Toluna buddy Caroldukest and she gave me permission to share it with you all...thanks carol, this is soo freaky, what i call synchronicities rather than coincidences....

Have a history teacher explain this----- if they can. ....

Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846.
John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946. ......

Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860.
John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960. ........

Both were particularly concerned with civil rights.
Both wives lost their children while living in the White House. ......

Both Presidents were shot on a Friday .
Both Presidents were shot in the head ......

Now it gets really weird.

Lincoln 's secretary was named Kennedy.
Kennedy's Secretary was named Lincoln . .......

Both were assassinated by Southerners.
Both were succeeded by Southerners named Johnson. ....

Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln , was born in 1808.
Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.....

John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln , was born in 1839.
Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, was born in 1939.......

Both assassins were known by their three names.
Both names are composed of fifteen letters. ......

Now hang on to your seat.

Lincoln was shot at the theater named 'Ford.'
Kennedy was shot in a car called ' Lincoln ' made by 'Ford.' .....

Lincoln was shot in a theater and his assassin ran and hid in a warehouse.
Kennedy was shot from a warehouse and his assassin ran and hid in a theater. .....

Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials.

And here's the kicker...

A week before Lincoln was shot, he was in Monroe , Maryland
A week before Kennedy was shot, he was with Marilyn Monroe......

Creepy huh?
Hey, this is one history lesson most people probably will not mind reading! XXXX

I really do not understand it when people say it is unfair for footballers to 'work only 90 mins' and then get paid millions.
These people are of course those who have done no homework and are all too ready to leap to silly accusations.
Do you not realise that to be a footballer is harder work than most jobs out there. People should understand that professional footballers train nearly everyday in all conditions rain, sun or snow! They have strict diets, limitations on social activities and hard ongoing training, which is not always fun fun fun.
On top of that they have to cope with media pressures and trying to live out of the public eye.
Also do not forget that footballers careers are extremely short in comparison to all other jobs out there. I am sure as a footballer everyone would say to themselves, if i have a career life of only around 15 years max, I had better earn all i can in that time. Common sense guys! Afterall not everyone can do what Linekar and Hansen did and become TV Pundits!
I have also heard people ramble on about how footballers salaries are not fair, in comparison to doctors and nurses. Well the truth is there is a huge global market for football, and because of that there is big money in the game. It is nothing to do with comparing it to other jobs. Would people pay to watch a doctor or nurse treat some random person in an hopsital. Abosultely not, you would have to be incredibly sad!
So dont blame the footballers, blame the fact its a world soprt and so many love the game!

COME ON MAN YOOOOOOO!!
ghostdog1Opinion by ghostdog1
For starters football is not a difficult job and the pressures placed upon them are more than compensated for by their pay. Many people, myself included, work in all weathers, are continually upgrading their training (over 40 years or more), work extremely unsociable hours and work a damn sight more hours than any footballer. As for their career life, hardly anybody these days has a job for life, with many people forced to change jobs and careers several times during their working lives. Why should footballers be any different? Personally speaking I do not begrudge footballers their pay, simply because I am not one of the fools who is prepared to fork out hard earned money to watch a group of intellectually challenged people run around chasing a bag of wind. Those who wish to pay for their entertainment are more than welcome to do so, and if it brings them enjoyment, so be it. Please do not compare a bag of wind kicker to a doctor or a nurse, it is very unworthy of an intelligent person, and as we all know doctors and nurses are, to use fooballing parlance, in a completely different, and far higher league to any footballer.

Personally I would rather be happy and poor

I know that money can bring happiness only to a certain extent

For example when I was a child my parents were quite poor so we never went to Alton Towers in the summer holidays and I never had kickers or the must have item at the time but I still had quite a happy childhood. I think as a result of this I have been brought up well and quite a fairly rounded person with values and morals
DESINSC956_MoongladeOpinion by DESINSC956_...
Money can bring happiness but there's a threshold over which more money has no impact: it's then a question of the individual's innate capacity for happiness. I used to have much more money than I needed. I was miserable because I hated the job I was doing at the time. Now I'm poorer and a good deal happier because I'm following my dream. To be poor, in the sense of having too little money to afford enough food, clothes and shelter is likely to result in unhappiness - although again a person's innate capacity for happiness may overcome this to some extent. I don't know.

Always is a film about a couple who are very much in love and share a dangerous profession as firefighters. The worst case scenario happens when the man dies in a fire but he comes back as a guardian spirit type idea and gives guidance to a pilot. It deals with grief and longing and the man has to play witness to a love affair between his wife and his trainee. Its a story that strikes deep at your heart and catches your imagination. It stayed with me for along time after i had watched the film the first time and even after watching it again it still tugged at my heart. I would recommend this film.

Always is a 1989 romantic comedy-drama directed by Steven Spielberg, and starring Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter, and John Goodman. Audrey Hepburn makes her final film appearance as an angel. The film was distributed by Universal Studios and United Artists.

The film concerns aerial firefighters who fly war-surplus aircraft dropping fire retardant slurry on wildfires. The movie is set in Kootenai National Forest, Montana.

The script is based somewhat on the 1943 movie A Guy Named Joe in that one of the pilots dies and returns as an angel to mentor a new pilot, only to find the new pilot falling in love with his former girlfriend.
